Out of 1.3 billion people, China must have a modern day Tolkien somewhere: it’s wanton environmental savagery is perfect inspiration for a 2nd Mordor.

“China will face difficulties securing water resources in the future as demand increases along with the country’s industrialization and urbanization, an official said at a press conference held on Thursday.

Hu Siyi, vice minister of water resources, said water shortages, serious river pollution and deteriorating aquatic ecology are “outstanding” and may threaten the country’s sustainable growth. With a population of 1.3 billion people, China now consumes more than 600 billion cubic meters of water per year, or about three-quarters of its exploitable water resources, said Hu.

    [...]

The ministry’s data show that 40% of Chinese rivers are seriously polluted and unfit for drinking; 75 billion tonnes of sewage was discharged in 2010. Moreover, about one-fifth of rivers are so polluted that their water quality is rated “Category V” — China rates its water quality from Category I to Category V, with the latter being defined as too toxic even to touch.”

The Charlie Brown “blah-blah-blah” drones on about tougher CCP regulations, monitoring water usage like Hades guards his souls, etc. Really? I’ve read articles back from ’08 circulating bravado of how the CCP was going crack heads, clean up the nefarious construction industry with tighter standards. She continues introducing tighter standards; why are the shoddy sand castles still built?

Apparently, even after 60+ years in power – the Great Leap Forward; 10′s of millions dead, countless imprisoned or enslaved – and years of gaga growth, China still can’t force an enduring societal problem into capitulation: dirty bribery.
