Chinese Culture- Keep your Friends Close

Posted by w_thames_the_d on January 31, 2010

I blogged about this earlier, the fact that in Confucianism, life is all about relationships. The closer to you one is, the more you owe them, this is guanxi.  So, your immediate family for instance is your primary concern, then cousins etc. This first level is the one to which you will be the most loyal, then decreasingly so, the less that you are familiar with a person.

The impact is that in China, unlike the USA, you will employ a family member, for instance, although he may be detrimental to your company- this is guanxi. One can see the potential negative ramifications of this.

When it Rains it Pours- First Google and now Chinese Espionage in the UK

Posted by w_thames_the_d on January 31, 2010

Full article here , excerpt to follow:

THE security service MI5 has accused China of bugging and burgling UK business executives and setting up “honeytraps” in a bid to blackmail them into betraying sensitive commercial secrets.

A leaked MI5 document says that undercover intelligence officers from the People’s Liberation Army and the Ministry of Public Security have also approached UK businessmen at trade fairs and exhibitions with the offer of “gifts” and “lavish hospitality”.

The gifts — cameras and memory sticks — have been found to contain electronic Trojan bugs which provide the Chinese with remote access to users’ computers.

MI5 says the Chinese government “represents one of the most significant espionage threats to the UK” because of its use of these methods, as well as widespread electronic hacking.

China to Become the Biggest World Economy- WTF talk bout Fuzzy Math

Posted by w_thames_the_d on January 31, 2010

Ok, here the China Daily, also known as the official mouth of the Chinese government, poses the question if China can overtake the USA as the largest economy in the world.

I guess if the government can figure out a way to deceive their way to it then anything is possible. But lets consider this:
as of 2008 the USA economy was about 14.2 trillion and China was 4.2 trillion
– lets assume that the USA stagnated and was 14.2 for 2009 and China was 4.6
Then, China, who is notorious for fudging on its statistics extrapolated that it may be possible to pass the US in 10 yrs.
If one does the math, it would take ten years of GDP growth of 10% , and assume that the USA does not grow one iota, for China just to catch the USA. Maybe the Chinese know someting about Obama that we dont, and that he will utterly cripple the economy, absent that, it doesnt seem possible. Beyond this, there are the issues of natural resources, like energy ( China uses some 5 times more energy to get a similar nudge in the GDP area as the USA- meaning it is a very inefficient economy. ) The inefficiency will catch up wiht them as they get larger and resources become more scarce. Also there are issues such as how much further exploitation is left in the world and local markets, problems with retiring Chinese etc.

It may be possible, but in ten years, seems like an opium induced dream.
