Chinese marathon athletes run into trouble

More than 30 male competitors at a Chinese marathon were reportedly disqualified after organisers discovered they had cheated during the race.

Organisers of the Xiamen International marathon, held in the south east of the country, found some runners had carried time-recording microchips of more than one competitor, registering two or more results after crossing the finishing line.

Meanwhile, others had hired imposters or used transport to navigate part of the way around the course, according to the Jiefang Daily, a newspaper endorsed by the Shanghai Communist Party.

The vast majority of the disqualified runners had registered times of two hours and 34 minutes or below, the minimum standard for high school students to attain extra credits for China’s ultra-competitive college entrance examinations.

China Fact- Old People and lots of ’em

Posted by w_thames_the_d on January 22, 2010

Talk about baby boom- in 2025 China will have about 526 million people aged 50 and above (598 million will be between 20–49 and fewer than 278 million will be below the age of 20).

In addition, they do not have an adequate social security system- this leads many to see the demise in strenght beginning around 2020. Or they could harness the power of the elderly. The problem is that the majority of these were brought up in the old system and thus their skill sets may not be what is needed over the next 20 years.

China Fact- Economic growth- Wow can They Keep it Up?

Posted by w_thames_the_d on January 22, 2010

China has experienced 7–9 percent GDP growth over the last 20 odd years. China China’s economy has doubled in size every six years since the economic reforms began in the 1980s. These are facts.

Can they continue? Chances are slim to none. There are not enough natural resources to support this growth (remember they have over 20% of all the people on the planet). Thus, it probably will not happen.
