Based on the rancor that these two countries have for one another and China’s general lack of concern for human life, I dont think that China will be too upset with this verdict.
excerpt chinadaily: The Consulate of Japan in Shenyang, capital of Northeast China’s Liaoning province, has received a letter from the Chinese government about Monday’s execution, an official from the Japanese Embassy in China, who would not be named, told China Daily on Wednesday. Embassy officials have also been told that another Japanese drug trafficker would be executed after Akano, but no further details are available. If the convict is executed, it will be the first execution by China of a Japanese national since the two countries normalized diplomatic relations in 1972, according to Japanese government sources. The 66-year-old Akano was arrested in September 2006 when he was meeting someone at an airport in Dalian of Liaoning, attempting to smuggle 2.5 kg of stimulant drugs to Japan. |

Posted by w_thames_the_d on March 31, 2010
Found this stat for Shanghai. There are still about 114 boys being born for every 100 girls. In the future, that is going to be a lot of excess boys running around…
“The gender ratio last year was 113.7 boys for every 100 girls among permanent residents, which consist of registered population and migrants staying in the city for over six months.
In 2008, it had been 114.8 boys to 100 girls.

Chinese Innovation
Posted by w_thames_the_d on March 31, 2010
From weirdasianews.com
“Chinese traffic officers on Jinggang’ao Highway in Henan province spotted a DIY disaster recently when they came across a truck sporting a cardboard windshield complete with the blue-faced driver poking his head out of the side window.
When questioned by the officers, the driver revealed that he had been using this tactic on busy roads for around 400 miles. This despite the fact that the weather was freezing cold outside. The driver did point out that he got a chance to rest his cold face and neck, usually on streets with less traffic.
In such cases, he used the two eye-holes cut-outs on the cardboard to double check the road. He told the officers that the windshield had been broken in an accident from a few days back. However, he was too busy with his deliveries to fix this particular glitch.
His homemade solution did not impress the authorities. In fact, the police dropped him off at the nearest repair shop and made him fix his truck.

Chinese Police Go To Trial Over Allegedly Killing a Young Adult In Their Custody
Posted by w_thames_the_d on March 31, 2010
SHANGNAN, Shaanxi: Five police officers will stand trial at a northwest China court Tuesday for the death of a 19-year-old student in custody in March, local authorities said.
The five suspects were all officials of the Public Security Department in Danfeng County of Shaanxi Province, including former department head Yan Yaofeng, anti-graft official Wang Qingbao, police chief Zhao Shuo and police officers Jia Yangang and Li Hongwei, the People’s Court of Shangnan County said on its website.
The five were accused of torturing Xu Gengrong, a high school student from Danfeng County, to death in police custody on March 8, it said.
Xu died in hospital, half an hour after suddenly falling ill while under arrest for murder. Police said he had “suddenly shown symptoms, including his face turning yellow, a weak pulse and dribbling at the mouth”.
Police said Xu, who had been in custody since February 28, confessed to the murder of a schoolgirl.
All the five suspects were removed from posts after Xu’s death. Prosecutors also accused them of power abuse and negligence of duty.
