Everything’s for Sale in China- Even Burglars

Posted by w_thames_the_d on March 25, 2010

Local police in China are advertising for leads to catch crooks, and the Chinese are pissed. I think its a good idea, it should be extended to the government.

excerpt:

“It’s New Year. We’re purchasing robbery suspects for 3,000 yuan ($440) each,” reads a slogan hanging from the gate of the local administration for industry and commerce in Zhangjiajie, Hunan province.

A photograph of the red banner found its way on the Internet and drew a lot of criticism from netizens, who believed authorities were treating criminal suspects “like goods not human beings”, local media reported yesterday.

Are you a Communist- In China You May Have to Be

Posted by w_thames_the_d on March 25, 2010

Communism in China raises many questions. For instance, people ask if China is really Communist. The short answer is yes, at least in political structure. Hu Jin Tao is the president and leader of the party ( the word everyone uses to avoid saying the communist party), and the party (communist party) still wields the big stick. As an example, to join Stat Owned Enterprises (SOE’s) or at least progress therein, one should join the (communist) party. I have  a friend from America, who was forced to join  the (communist) party, in order to obtain his position with a local joint venture. The man is as white as they come, but he was to be the plant manager of this JV. In order to do so, he had to become a member of the part- so, he is now a card carrying member of the CCP or Chinese Communist Party.

Posted by w_thames_the_d on March 25, 2010

The drought in southern China is so severe that food prices are rising, and food is becoming scarce. So what do they do, they plant tobaccoe of course!

excerpt:

Rice field to grow tobacco plant

Huili, a county in southwest China’s Sichuan province suffering drought will grow drought-resistant tobacco plants in rice fields at the end of April or at the beginning of May if rain still doesn’t come, the Beijing Times reported today.

The move is to ensure farmer’s revenue if the drought lingers, according to Gu Qing, an expert in Sichuan Climate Center.

The drought, which the local people say is the worst in a century, is forecast to linger till the start of the rainy season in May.

Consumerisim in China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on March 25, 2010

The US, and the west are consumer driven countries. We have tons of products that line the shelves, we dedicate literally tens of square meters on toothpaste and soap alone. China reminds me more of Cuba. They have products, but maybe about one-fifth of what you would see in the states. When you first enter most stores, they remind you of what you would find in a small general store in Iowa. Oh yeah, they dont stay open very long either.
