Whats More Important, Golf or the Ecology- In China, the Latter

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 8, 2010

They are building a golf course in a nature preserve in China. Odds are that although it is illegal, they will never stop. Then they wonder why they have sever drought.

from chinadaily.com

“BEIJING – An illegal golf course under construction in an ecological conservation area in Erdos in North China’s Inner Mongolia autonomous region is endangering precious plants beneficial to soil and water conservation in such a parched environment.

The golf course, which is as large as 3,500 mu (233 hectares), is located in Jiuchenggong village, Dongsheng district, 15 km away from Erdos city. Areas near the village have struggled to cope with the twin problems of a severe water shortage and soil erosion since the 1960s, the Economic Information Daily reported on Thursday.

In response to these environmental challenges, in 1998 the Ministry of Water Resources planted seabuckthorn in the area to solidify the sand and improve the local ecology, which has begun to show signs of improvement. However, the construction of the golf course poses a threat to these environmental gains, the report said.

The China Effect- Two Dead at FoxConn

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 8, 2010

Foxconn does some work for Apple as well as others. I know some of the assembly for the Iphone and I think some of its guts are made by them. Anyway, they had an issue a while ago with stolen Iphones and a ‘suicide’ in Shenzhen China. According to the article below, 2 of their workers ‘committed’ suicide in the same day in Shenzhen China. Man this place is a bizarre place to work..

“Two Foxconn employees were separately found dead Wednesday in Shenzhen, according to http://www.nfdaily.cn.

A man was found dead by his parents on Thursday morning in Guanlan Zhangge village, and a woman committed suicide by jumping from a work building in the Guanlan business area in Shenzhen.

Representatives from Foxconn, the Taiwan-based computer company, told reporters the dead woman was a front-line worker hired last December. Local police started their investigation, and representatives from Bao’an police station excluded the possibility of murder, according to the scene investigation.

The number of staff deaths at Foxconn this year has climbed to six, and five of those were caused by jumping off a building.

Subways

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 8, 2010

The morning subway is a trip. Inside you see many long faces, people just want to get to work and avoid any bullshit before arriving. Many Beijinger, due to the high house prices are forced to commute an hour each way to work, extending their work day to 13 hours.
In the winter its not as bad, its more full, as everyone wears jackets, but the smell of human bodies and sweat, is not an issue.

Associated with, How to Piss off Chinese

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 8, 2010

I posted a list of things not to say to Chinese, lest you want to piss them off. The post came from here and is great! Here are some of the comments that feed off the post…basically this guy is talking about things that Chinese usually ask you when you come to China, and like the above, it is so true.

“1) Are you married?
a) Yes, often.
b) No, that’s why I’m here. Are you offering?
c) Only for tax purposes.
d) I despise families and children.
e) I can’t get you a green card.

2) How much money do you make?
a) More than your entire family (up to and including second cousins) combined.
b) Nothing, I’m on a mission from God.
c) They pay me in 饺子.
d) You mean when I do actually get paid?
e) Money is the devil of the running dog bourgeoisie. Your country has lost its way and must be purged.

3) Where are you from/Are you American?
a) Depends whos askin’.
b) Somewhere in the vicinity of Betelgeuse.
c) No, I’m from the splittist Republic of Texas.
d) It’s called Jesusland now.
e) I have dual citizenship in country X and country Y (Taiwanese respond with sage understanding of your pragmatism; mainland Chinese heads explode).

Chinese are Baffled by Conventions Such as Politeness and Common Courtesy

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 8, 2010

They are also baffled by conventions such as politeness and common courtesy as they have not learned what it means to wait in line , rarely cover their mouths when they sneeze, and spit.

All of these are maddening, but the worst is how they will use the entry or exit of a door or elevator or escalator to hold an important meeting. As soon as the door opens, they deem it the right time to start gabbing, huddle in a little mass and basically wreak havoc on all those who wish to enter or exit. They love to do this at any door, at the top of the stairs leading to doors, right when they exit the subway and the tops of stairs…
