Beijing Rain

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 10, 2010

Its still raining here, which is odd, Beijing is really a semi arid place, so to have so much rain is quite unnatural. Down in the south they are still suffering from the drought. In the 50’s China had this phenomenon as well. Tens of millions starved to death due to foolish policies that ruined the land (great leap forward). One cant help but wonder if it is happening again.

China Blacklists 100 Reporters, Probably has Beaten Thousand More.

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 10, 2010

“SHENYANG – China’s press watchdog blacklisted nearly one hundred media workers in 2009 for illegal deeds like bribery and blackmail, with more than 20 journalists convicted of offenses.

According to Li Dongdong, deputy head of the General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP), more than ten newspapers nationwide, including the Beijing Times and the Guangzhou-based 21st Century Business Herald, received warnings or were suspended for rectification for publishing false reports in 2009.

The figures came after reports in late March that nine journalists from eight media organizations had received jail sentences – ranging from one-and-half year to 16 years – for taking hush money to cover up a deadly coal mine accident in north China.

The majority of the news is negative towards the USA, Tiger’s mistress calls him a liar, USA pilot shoots a guy, that is what runs on the left column. Then, on the right all the beautiful things about China. This is fair and balanced China style.

China Puts Lime in Flour- Unsafe Chinese Products

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 10, 2010

WTF?

They complain about KFC coupons, they make fake eggs, peas and such, and now add lime to flour, just because it is cheap. You can hear the groans of humanity pulling at its seams with each news item in China.

BEIJING – Recent investigations have found that some bleaching agents widely used in flour production contain as much as 30 percent pulverized lime, a substance that has been linked to health problems.

Local insiders, who were worried the material would cause serious harm to public health, reported that pulverized lime is added to the bleaching agent produced by the Yuzhong Food Additive Company in Rugao in East China’s Jiangsu province, the report said.

Reporters then collected samples by visiting the company. Follow-up tests confirmed that some 30 percent of pulverized lime is used in the bleaching agent, the report said.

“Before the Spring Festival this year, the company purchased four trucks’ worth of pulverized lime, with each truck carrying 40 tons. An average of 1 jin (0.5 kg) of pulverized lime was added to every 4 jin of the bleaching agent,” a local insider was quoted as saying.

The normal price of bleaching agent is 11,000 yuan ($1,611) per ton, but the one from the Yuzhong company was only sold at only 9,000 yuan per ton.

Such news did not surprise some people within the industry. “Their low prices resulted from adding pulverized lime,” a salesperson from another bleaching agent company in Henan said upon learning about the other company’s lower price.

Most of the country’s bleaching agent companies are located in Henan. The Yuzhong company owner, surnamed Chen, said the bleaching agent was mainly sold to big-scale flour manufacturers in Shandong, Jiangsu and Anhui provinces.

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 10, 2010

But remember, that less then half of the Chinese judges held a degree, and that is only  a 4 year degree, let alone the advanced education that foreign judges typically receive.

“The Chinese judiciary continues to improve the educational levels of judges and the quality of their judicial opinions. According to SPC statistics, about 40 percent of Chinese judges had earned a 4-year university degree in 2003”
