Dealing With China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 23, 2010

Great post here, the author Daniel Korski is talking about how to deal with China in the future, he highlights her inability to acquiesce and does what she wants, when she wants.

excerpt:
” and order a wholesale review of our China policy. For, even though cordial relations should be an aim – indeed, the aim – of all diplomatic relations, this cannot be pursued at all costs or under all conditions. Beijing’s behaviour now and at the Copenhagen talks shows, without doubt, what the West is dealing with: a revanchist power that wants to meet the West on its own terms, taking the rights conferred by the Westphalian state system but respecting none of the responsibilities. China’s talk of “face” is somehow only relevant to itself, not to others.

It is time to wake up to this reality and look at how to improve the leverage the West has. What do we have that China wants? Let’s look at withholding things whenever China acts up. Or what about making travel by Chinese tourists to Europe a bit harder and more expensive? What about a “carbon deficient” warning label on all goods from China sold in Europe? Or a meeting of all EU leaders with the Dalai Lama – Beijing will hardly cut off ties to all of Europe.

I am not looking for a trade war or a tit-for-tat fight. but a better use of Western assets in the same cold, calculating way that China acts.”

Over 70% of Chinese Trust the Government

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 23, 2010

This is funny, it is a statistic whereby it is stated that the US ranks last in trusting its government, but places like China, over 70% trust theirs. All I can say is good then let them keep it, keep the beloved government. After all, its their country and culture, and if they believe the shite they are dished out, then in the end they deserve what they get. As for the US, I can see it, and actually if you notice there is a correlation between freedom of thought and speech and dislike for one’s government. Maybe we just feel more free to complain.

caveat, I found this on a Chinese website, chinadialy, so take it for what its worth.

“The 2010 Edelman Trust Barometer showed that 67 percent of 200 people surveyed in the UAE trust the country’s government. That was below 84 percent for Singapore, 75 percent for the Netherlands and 74 percent for China.
The UAE ranked higher than Western countries including the U.S., which ranked last, the UK, Germany, Sweden and France, according to the survey, conducted by StrategyOne on behalf of Edelman.”

Chinese Officials Cant Declare Assets, Too Much Corruption

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 23, 2010

China said that they would start making the governmental leaders declare all assets in order to keep them honest. one party leader says they are too corrupt, basically the country would collapse if they did it, and I am inclined to agree.

” Jiang Zongfu, deputy mayor of Linxiang, a county-level city in Hunan, called for “caution” in introducing the officials’ assets declaration system. “That’s because first of all, a true declaration of officials’ assets will cause social chaos,” he was quoted as saying by the Changsha-based Xiaoxiang Morning News on Thursday. The 41-year-old deputy mayor acknowledged that his view is different from most people.

He revealed he had decided not to publish his opinion on his blog out of fear of a backlash from the public”

China’s Ex-Richest Man on Trail- Shocker

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 23, 2010

But is it really a shocker, this place is so corrupt, it probably doesnt deserve any ink.

“BEIJING — Huang Guangyu, once China’s richest man and a home appliance tycoon, stood trial on Thursday in Beijing for illegal business dealing, insider trading and corporate bribery.
Huang, former chairman of Gome Electrical Appliances Holdings, was detained in November of 2008 for suspected stock market manipulation. An investigation later exposed a number of high-ranking officials who have also been detained or prosecuted.”

Chonqing China Officials Over 200 to the Pokey and 45 Death or Life

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 23, 2010

Chongqing is a great place, but it is very corrpt, so a shitload of people are going down.

excerpt
“A total of 383 people have been convicted of being mafia-style gang members in Chongqing since June 2009, with 254 of them sentenced to more than 5 years in jail and 45 sentenced to death or life in jail, the chinanews.com.cn reported Friday.

Chinanews cited a report by the Higher People’s Court of Chongqing Municipality and said 520 criminals were sentenced in the first trial and 219 were sentenced in the second trial between June 2009 and March 31, 2010.

The report said 13 of the 24 mafia-style gangs had their own companies, with five of them having more than three companies and five having assets of more than 100 million yuan ($14.6 million).

According to the report, 54 percent of the gangs had “protective umbrellas,” and 24 government employees were sued for protecting gangs. The report said the inability of societal management to keep up with Chongqing’s fast economic development was mainly to blame for the existence of mafia-style gangs.”

Chicoms Tell Chinese They must Promote China When they Travel

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 23, 2010

No lie, just look at the absurdity of this. The communist party is telling Chinese to “promote the image of China when they go abroad”, WTF? Firstly this is so Chinese, to not understand the power of the net and all. Like we dont have the resources to investigate China, but believe some Chinese tourist when they say China has no corruption. It is funny also that many Chinese will obey, I heard they are horrible in Australia. Always talking up China, but that is of course , they brag about it, but no longer live there.

How to improve China’s image

How to improve China's image

Editor’s note: We must depend on ourselves instead of foreign media to create China’s image in the world, the author said.

“When traveling abroad, Chinese should disseminate information about China. We Chinese must rely on ourselves to improve our country’s image….

I read in an April 12 article in Lianhe Zaobao that Chinese leaders should be more aggressive in defending China’s image abroad in order to avoid the fate of the Soviet Union, which was labeled an “evil empire” by the United States.

…Since the end of 1980s, however, the tide has changed again as Western media and governments began to criticize China on human rights.

Villas in China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 23, 2010

China has some good villas, you just have to find the ones that are out in the countryside and usally reserved for communist party members, those are the best. They have the best facilities and staff. The TV sucks, though as it is only national crap. I am at one now.
