Made in China- Eco Refugees, Cancer Villages

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 28, 2010

This is pretty sad, we have new terms for the destruction that China is wreaking on the environment and its people, they are cancer villages and eco-refugees. Cancer villages are what the name implies, places where the Chinese have poisoned the environment so much, they are inhabitable. Then, springing from this, you have eco-refugees, they are refugees from places that are now uninhabitable due to China poisoning the environment.

Climate change and irrigation schemes are drying up rivers and speeding the spread of deserts, leading to plans to move tens of millions of people.

“[M]illions of Chinese eco-refugees…have been resettled because their home environments [have] degraded to the point where they were no longer fit for human habitation. The government says more than 150 million people will have to be moved. Water shortages exacerbated by over-irrigation and climate change are the main cause.

The problem is most severe in the north-west, where desert sands are swallowing up farmland, homes and towns. The Yellow river is diverted more than 62 miles (100km) to replenish dried-up reservoirs and aquifers in Minqin, where the population has swollen from 860,000 to 2.3 million over the last 60 years, even as water supplies have declined. It is not enough.

The government pays many farmers to cease production and has relocated thousands of others…out of the worst affected areas. The government has given [them] a new home and land, but the desert winds still howl and [the] fields are bordered by sand dunes. Workers in the fields wear masks to protect their faces from the dust storms that whip in from the dunes.”

Chinese Stripped of Olympics Medal- Underage Gymnasts

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 28, 2010

This s from the USA TODAY, of course Chines newspapers have no information about the incident. Remember how indignant they were when in the ’08 Olympics, everyone said that their gymnasts were well underage… well here is just one example of that being true. We will see how many more lose their medals in the coming months and years.

“By Stephen Wilson, AP Sports Writer DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — China was stripped of a bronze medal from the 2000 Sydney Olympics on Wednesday for fielding an underage gymnast. The medal was given to the United States instead.
The International Olympic Committee acted after investigations by the sport’s governing body determined that Dong Fangxiao was only 14 at the 2000 Games. Gymnasts must turn 16 during the Olympic year to be eligible.

“I’m really just proud to know that justice prevailed,” said Dominique Dawes, a member of the U.S. squad in 2000. “My teammates are very well-deserving of the bronze medal, and I’m sure each and every one of us will be thrilled. We will cherish it.”

Chinese Students Kick the Shit Out of a Teacher

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 28, 2010

Actually for China this is nothing new, during the cultural revolution, teachers were tortured and Killed and that was only 35 years ago. Also, this is why the Chinese youths are considered unbearable by much of the education community.

“GUANGZHOU – Dozens of teachers at a Lufeng county high school in South China’s Guangdong province continued their strike on Tuesday to protest violence against teachers.

The strike at Jiazi No 1 High School began on Monday after Fan Bing, a teacher at the school, was beaten twice by his students and their relatives last Friday. Fan, 31, has been teaching at the school for eight years.

The teacher was first beaten by three male students after he tried to stop the students from disturbing a test last Friday.

The beating lasted about five minutes and was stopped by Fan’s colleagues. But five minutes later, one of the three students called in his uncle, who then beat Fan until he lost consciousness and went into a coma.

Fan has come out of the coma but remained hospitalized on Tuesday in Rongjun Hospital of Guangzhou. Doctors said they do not know whether Fan’s left eye can be saved, as it was seriously damaged in the assault.

Police said the assailant, who escaped after he beat Fan, has a previous criminal record and was receiving medical treatment on bail.

From his hospital bed, Fan said he would forgive the students and their relatives if they apologized. So far none of them have apologized. The case has again raised great concern among local residents over school security.

Lin Shaokui, director of Lufeng county bureau of education, and Chen Yukeng, chief of the county’s public security bureau, have both called for a quick investigation into the case. They promised to bring the assailants to justice and seriously punish them.

Liang Weifa, director of Guangdong provincial department of public security, has also urged relevant departments to investigate the case and capture the suspect as soon as possible to ensure campus safety.

Ge Xinbin, a professor from Guangzhou-based South China Normal University, said teachers have the right to use proper ways to educate and criticize misbehaving students according to relevant laws and regulations.

“But the teaching environment now has become poorer compared to previous years and many teachers now dare not criticize their students in fear of retaliation,” Ge said.”
