Working in China-For a Chinese Company

Posted by w_thames_the_d on June 14, 2010

I can honestly say that I now somewhat understand China. I have been here for a few years, but was somewhat spoiled. I had previously worked for American and foreign companies company.

I now am doing some work for a Chinese company. What a freaking difference! I enjoy the people, but the atmosphere is so guarded, so “big brother” its almost spooky. Going to work there is like something out of the one Grisham novel,  The Firm (the one with Tom Cruise).

For instance, security guards constantly prowl about and watch all that you do. Breaks are not taken, and no one uses cell phones at their desks. You do not feel free to roam the halls of the place, and conversation is kept to a minimum.

The big brother factor is also deep in so far as after lunch we all take a little nap. Just like in pre-school, people will turn off the lights and all of the workers will retire to their cots to sleep. As the lights are off,  no one can work, so it is implied that I nap as well. In addition, we have several cafeterias for the workers, which controls the time and place of our meals. It honestly feels like being incarcerated.  I will leave shortly.

Discovery in China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on June 14, 2010

Interesting finding here. I saw that it is said that Afghanistan has a veritable treasure trove of natural resources under her soil. It was reported that the US discovered these resources. Some might say that the US is doing this as a veil to legitimize their unearthing the poppy fields over there and even the leaders of the Taliban.

To me it interesting from a different perspective. I reside in China now but am American. I am constantly amazed at how little this place currently does for mankind. All of the great modern discoveries, inventions, things that help mankind, do not come from China. It would appear that they have historically been, and still are, focusing mostly on themselves and not really forwarding the betterment of mankind. I hope that this will change.

Comfy in China

This is a seat that the elevator operator sits in to do his job. It is a little old fashioned, maybe rustic, but seems to work well.
