East Timor Calls Chinese Warships “Gucci Knockoffs” Then Buys them

Posted by w_thames_the_d on June 23, 2010

Chinese have pretty good language skills but they often dont understand nuance and sarcasm. This is not such a case, but shows the Chinese crazy nationalism and failure to understand when a compliment can actually be a put down.
East Timor called Western warships “Guccis” and the Chinese versions “knockoffs” or “fake Guccis”. To me this is hilarious, I cannot imagine anyone taking pride in selling a knockoff, but the China Daily proudly has this posted on page one.

“CANBERRA, Australia – East Timor would prefer to buy a “fake Gucci ship from China” than pay extra for Western military hardware, the nation’s president said after acquiring two Chinese warships. East Timor this month took delivery of two Shanghai class navy patrol boats from defense company China Poly Group in a move widely interpreted as a diplomatic rebuff to near neighbor Australia, which has been the biggest military supporter of East Timor since it became independent of Indonesia in 1999.

Australia developed a purpose-built patrol boat for its South Pacific neighbors in the 1980s as part of its foreign aid program and 12 island nations now use them for maritime surveillance.

But East Timorese President Jose Ramos-Horta on Wednesday likened military technology produced by developed countries to the expensive Italian fashion label Gucci.

“It’s a bit like buying … a genuine Italian Gucci ship against buying a fake Gucci ship from China,” Ramos-Horta told the National Press Club during his first state visit to Australia.”

China and the World Cup

Posted by w_thames_the_d on June 23, 2010

China is very very embarrassed about not making the world cup. It is odd, as in the eyes of the world they are not seen as a sports power. But I am currently watching CCTV which is the Chinese national TV channel (spoiler alert- its communist controlled). So, they are talking about how China is a world power in sports, but they only reference the ’08 Beijing Olympic games, as if that performance shows them to be stellar athletes irrespective of what little else they have done.

It is also very Chinese to disparage otehrs to save face or to be singled out for a poor performance. For instance, tney said, “yeah we didnt go to the world cup but neither did India, and look at how many people they have…” This type of thing comes off as trite and low class. Maybe some would say the same about this post, but I am just calling it like I see it.

Chicoms Smother Society

Posted by w_thames_the_d on June 23, 2010

I had a good talk with some Chinese yesterday and their feelings mirrored my own. They said that the constant surveillance of the communist party, and her blocking off websites and monitoring the net, make them feel untrusted and like children. There is a great amount of frustration here with the communist party.

On the other hand, there is a ton of the “Stockholm Syndrome” whereby the victims feel a kinship with the oppressor. That is probably how the many atrocities committed by this country and the tens of millions were able to be slaughtered by those in power.
