Chinese Safety Kit- China Photo, China Life

Posted by w_thames_the_d on September 7, 2010

This is a truck in China. And due to the problem they have had lately with traffic jams, it looks like the owner of htis vehicle has made his own safety kit and left it on his dashboard. He has some liquids to avoid dehydration, a CD for your listening pleasure, a Coke, some candies and some toilet paper, just in case….

Why Did the Chinaman Cross the Road? Because He had a Death Wish

Posted by w_thames_the_d on September 7, 2010

Crossing the street in China is an adventure. Vets of any war would no doubt feel at home or at least find it reminiscent of their past experiences in defending our country and their safety. In a word it is unsafe, in a few words, it is chaotic , frenetic and very unsafe.
First off, in china you have to avoid the cars, and in a city that is supposed to have maybe 500 000 vehicle, it current has a few million. Add to this the general inability of a Chinaman to navigate anything with a motor and you have a recipe for disaster. The “Beverly Hillbilly” Chinese cruise around in large Buick’s or Mercedes, but frequently end up driving on the sidewalk and sideswiping everything in their way. Then, you have the more traditional Chinese coolies, they drive the cheap China made vehicles which are basically like leaf blowers on steroids. These people have paid about U$4000 for a car and now that they have it, they think they own the road. They clog up traffic and after passing along he heavy duty larger vehicles they usually are left with mufflers and mirrors dangling from their sides and rear.
You then have the motorcycle taxis who are like whirling dervishes. They will cut and weave in and out and annoy everyone, they are my weapon of choice for a street crossing. The bicyclists are the most benign, they do not have enough inertia nor mass to do any real harm and basically peddle up and down, dodge the cars and motorcycles and try not to get killed.
Probably the most insidious of all of he street traffic comes in the form of the electric bicycles. These silent ninjas whip around like like the gods of death. Having no internal combustion engine, they are impossible to hear, unless they bleat their horns, which they typically do only after your leg is lodged in the spokes of their front wheels. There is a special place in hell dedicated to these mongrels who sew the seeds of disharmony in what is an already inhuman process-crossing the street in China.

as for me, I merely carry my phone at the ready and watch it all…

Graphic Depiction of How Chinese Queue Up…

Posted by w_thames_the_d on September 7, 2010

This shot is as good an example of how Chinese queu up for anything. As you can see, there are 4 red arrows, these are the turnstiles through which the patrons may pass. But also, as you can see:
1- the people on the left have not yet figured out that those two turnstiles cannot be used, so they must shift to our right.
2-for those who are behind the correct turnstiles, there is no line, there is not even a semblance of a line
The reason that they are spread out en masse in a horizontal line is that the Chinese cannot queue up properly. And if they did do it properly, someone would cut in front of them, so they basically flock, just as the photo shows. (you cannot fully appreciate the “flock versus proper line” in the photo , but trust me, behind those turnstiles, there is nothing but humanity in no form nor shape of what a civilized country would call a line.

China’s One Child Policy – How to Totally Ruin a Kid

Posted by w_thames_the_d on September 7, 2010

Al of my colleagues have their mandatory one child and they seem to be loving parents. Sometimes they seem to be too loving, as in they may spoil their little children. The big problem China has with their kids is that these one-child policy kids get the attention of both parents and then usually the man’s grandparents as well. This may be too much attention from adults and not enough from peers. The studies show that these kids are less socially adept and a little clingy. In addition, the China one child policy boys have lower lung capacity and emotional maturity for their age.
One has to wonder just how much this policy is contaminating the child and what kind of adults will be. Take this as an example. Two of my colleagues have uprooted themselves from their current homes and purchased homes nearby some good schools, just so that the child would be able to attend 1st grade at that school! To me this is ludicrous, as it gives the kid too much power at such a young age. Think about it, if the kid has the power to command this type of lifestyle change at the age of 5, what will they be like when they are older.
But what the poor kid doesn’t realize is that the parents are really making an investment in him or her. By 2050 China will have 100 million people over the age of 80 and none of them will have social security. This literally means that all of these maladaptive china one child policy kids will be providing for them. With all of that pressure, and all of that power given to them, its no wonder that 40% of them suffer from neurosis.

Painfully Poor in China- Middle Class Earns Upwards of 2U$ Per Day?

Posted by w_thames_the_d on September 7, 2010

Asian Development Bank (ADB) to China: we have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that you have over 800 000 0000 people who are middle class! The bad news is that these people only earn from 2 to 20 U$ per day….WTF?
This means that to live in China and be middle class, you only need to earn from U$750-7500 per year?
First off,the Chinese are pissed about this report as they think it makes them look like poor rubes,,, well,,,, umm after living here a few years, I would have to say that um…. well I better not address this point.
But to the analysis…
IF you look at the statistic the range they propose is quite large, but if you knew China, it would make sense. I think the lower end seems a little low, but not much. For instance, it is widely held that the U$7500 in Beijing is pretty good money. And cities like Beijing Shanghai are the most expensive. If we extrapolate from there and understand that in some Chinese cities you can get a great meal for less than U$2.50 and the average monthly wage is about what we were paying in the west during the turn of the century, then it makes sense.
China is still developing and has too many people. Thus, China will always be slightly poor, its a numbers game. When you have a country a little larger than four times that of the USA, you will have some poverty.
So with the cost of living in China being so low , instead of retiring in that little Villa in Puerta Vallarta, you can really stretch your dollar and come to China.. on second thought, maybe its better to be in Puerto Vallarta, the alcohol is better, they are happier and they sure as hell dont spit on the streets!

excerpt:
“The Asian Development Bank (ADB) released a report recently that said more than 800 million people in China, or about 62 percent of its population, could be classified as middle class. The ADB says people earning between $2 and $20 a day belong to the middle class, which is alienated from China’s reality,”

Chinese Diapers or Open Crotch Pants

Posted by w_thames_the_d on September 7, 2010

This little kid has open crotch pants, instead of a diaper. This is how the Chinese do it. They just rip the bottom out of the pants and let the kids poop and pee on the streets. This is such a common site in China.

Horrible Traffic in Beijng- Traffic for as Far as You Can See

Posted by w_thames_the_d on September 7, 2010

This is pretty common for Beijing traffic. Around 6 pm you cannot get a cab, and if you do it takes for ever to go from point “a’ to point “b”, you would be better off crawling….

The town was designed for emperors who were the only ones who could roam the streets in their personal carriages, not millions of cars.
