China Pissed at the Nobel Prize Commitee, but Addresses the Issue

Posted by w_thames_the_d on October 12, 2010

A chinese guy who is in jail, recently won the Nobel Peace Prize. Aside from the fact that only China could have a vicar of peace being thrown in the pokey, China has decided to lambast the awards committee and black out all news of this award, tll now. In the Chinadaily, the Chinese have found a kindered spirit who has claimed that it is actually illegal for the committee to offer the award to this man. In the quote below, the Norwegian, has said that the award should go to someone who has “made significant contributions to defend peace etc.” IMHO, it seems like the Chinese guy was attempting to do just that till he was jailed, so maybe by judging his acts striclty by the letter of the charter one could see thta he has failed to ‘contribute to defend peace” as he is behind bars. After all, being in the slammer does not lend itself to acts of kindness or defending peace, its just hard to marshall the troops from that 3×3 cell, in between the bouts of wa.ter. board.ing, and re education….
excerpt:
“”Norwegian jurist and writer Fredrik S. Heffermehl called it a wrong decision and illegal to award the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize to Liu Xiaobo, according to the website of the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter. In a comment on the website on Oct 8, the jurist said the Nobel Peace Prize was to support those organizations and individuals who have made significant contributions to defend peace, promote disarmament and abolish national military forces.”

Home Sweet Home….Back to Beijing

AHHH home again home again…
I just returned from the USA where I filled my gullet with all the finest preservative engorged foods that the US has to offer and am filling quite satisfied. I have some keen observations that I’d like to make, but first a quick rant.
It felt good to be home, the cab ride, the comfort of the well known, my China digs etc. and last night, I actually felt good and safe in the cab as I returned to my lair here in my little part of the world. Upon arrival, I purchased a few scraps of food for my beloved rabbit who had been left alone for 10 days(she is fine, a rabbit I have found, is a sturdy pet), and was happy to see me.
This morning I decided to sleep late and not go to work, that was my plan. I’d been jonesing for some Madden and played till about 430 which aided in my decision not to return to work today. Anyway…
I had the most wonderful of slumbers till I was awoken by a pounding at my door and someone viciously attempting to open my door. I am not a morning person, but it was 11 or so which meant that my usual morning anger had subsided, but having someone pounding on one’s door while attempting to open it is quite annoying. Anyway…
I stormed to the door to see who was attempting to bother/visit me. Through the peep hole I saw it was some working type gentleman of poor manners and obviously ill-bred, I almost went back to bed, but decided to engage him.
Basically I shrieked at him in my pidgin Chinese and said, “Go away I dont know you!”
He calmly responded in some dialect of Mandarin that is quite foreign to me and I was quite fed up and whipped open the door ready to verbally assault him, when he saw me , apologized and moved off.
I then decided to get the beloved rabbit some sustenance at the store on the first floor when I entered the hallway and was assaulted by the stench of tolulene. Tolulende, I learned in college chemstry, is that awesome smell used in model airplane glue, you know that glue or cement you used to build models when you are a kid. The smell is good, but prolonged exposure to it is dangerous I believe. The funny thing is that my hallway has a tolulene haze, it reeks. Apparently my genius neighbors have decided to use it in fabricating something or maybe they have opened a meth lab, but no shit, the hallway has a hazy wall of this toxic stuff. This being China, I merely took it all in and decided to blog about it.
Its really not surprising, I have had problems with my lungs since moving in here and the apartment of my neighbors is always awash in the sounds of construction. At first I thought they were merely decorating the place, but after one year it continues unabated, and I truly have no idea what they are doing or why they need to use such harsh chemicals, but they do. If this were a normal country, I would get the authorities involved, but its China…
Oh yeah, I think the rabbit is pissed, she is trying to get as far away from the front door as possible, I guess she is like my miner canary (the ones that alert you to poisons when digging in a mine), and is telling me to address the situation, but then again, it is China…
Ahhh home sweet home….

Back to the Jungle- I Mean China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on October 12, 2010

I am pretty exhausted, and just got home, I mean to China… I have some cool observations, or maybe just rants, but am a little tired now, so suffice it to say , you will have to wait till tomorrow. But just as an fyi, I spent a little time in New York City, a place not known for its friendliness, but after living in Beijing or China for 3 years, I’ve become institutionalized to their ways…
Case in point, I went to New York City for a few days and found them to be the most friendly people on the planet… does this tell you anything?
., I really thiought theat New YOirkers were the most pleasant people I have met….
