Chinese Rickshaw Cabs

Posted by w_thames_the_d on October 19, 2010

Today I had a nice walk to the subway, walk due to the fact that once again the Chinese police are doing their ‘jobs’, and i stress both words to the maximum extent of their definitions, by monitoring the illegal cabs and not allowing them to carry passengers today, wow, wtf did i just say?
The cops are not allowing the illegal cabs to work today, and then I made a commentary that I do not respect the cops here nor the job that they do.
Now that I’ve cleared that up, let me tell you about the great Chinese illegal ‘black’ rickshaw cabs. They are pretty cool and basically motorcycles with a canopy as a roof and a few extra wheels. The passengers sits in the rear over the wheel in this little cage. The thing operates like Chitty Chitty bang bang sans the flying, they ooze soot , smoke and oil and are not very pretty.
The experience can be exhilarating and scary. The guys who drive these things weave, bob, and skirt like Chris Johnson, Barry Sanders and or Muhammad Ali.
My friends have all warned me about taking the cabs and they are probably right. The drivers are the bane of safe passage as they typically drive the wrong way, cut off drivers and yell a lot. When you come to China, and you should, you should take one of these for a short trip, a very short trip.

  1. Down here where I am in GZ, they don’t have many of these. Mostly it’s just motorcycles, and they will literally drive anywhere! Watch out if you are walking on the sidewalk!
