Hello Lisa, or Is it Amy Today- Naming in China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on November 3, 2010

The Chiinese are cool, they take ‘English names’,. and make it easier for us to communicate. The reason is that for your typical foreigner pronouncing the surname 小 may be quite difficult. So the Chinese being polite and also making it easy to do business with us and take our cash, take English names. The problem is that they are constantly changing them. So, one day Wang Xiao or Amy as she is called, becomes wang lisa and then wang lilly, it can be very frustrating. You get a text from someone called Lilly and you have no idea who it is, turns out it is amy who once was storm, but then decided to now use the name lilly. I guess I can give them an ‘E’ for effort.

Photo Why the Chinese Hate China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on November 3, 2010

I should have videoed this scene. While entering the subway at Jianguomen the Chinese were particularly aggressive, an older lady almost got knocked over. Anyway the Chinese all hate this pushing and shoving they endure when they take public transportation, they call it uncivilized. My question is , if so many people hate it, then why do they still do it?

Psst Dont Tell the Chinese

Posted by w_thames_the_d on November 3, 2010

Contrary to what 1,300,000,000 chinese tell you, the great wall is not visible from space. At least thats what the astronauts tell you. Wait till the Chinese go up again, they will probably say different.

Can You Drive in China?

Posted by w_thames_the_d on November 3, 2010

Very few people in China own cars (approx 4%) so I guess it stands to reason that very few people here have licenses to drive. It always slays me when a Chinaman looks at you and gasps in amazement because you can drive and yes you have been driving since you were 14 (in Iowa you get a permit at this age).
I have many friends in their 30’s who are just taking driving lesson, all in preparation to buy their first car.
