Creative Writing and Studying Fiction in China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on November 7, 2010

While in China, I decided to study, to better myself as it were. And in so doing I took a class on creative writing/fiction. Although I love fiction, it was not my intention to study it here. The problem was that I took classes in China’s laws and legals system…
The first day of class, we all listened as the professors explained to us the nuance of Chinese law.
“Yes, by Chinese law, everyone should not work more than 6 days a week, nor for greater than 48 hours, nor for less than 900 rmb…” stone-faced prof

“what about the restaurant at the corner where the people are given 2 days off per month, are locked in their apartments during the work week and receive 800 rmb?” me

“This does not happen in china.” stone-faced prof

“In China everyone has the right to appeal any legal action which includes coming to Beijing to do so.” other stone faced chinaman.

“what about the ‘hit squads’ sent from the villages in order to preclude this from happening. i mean the men who go and actually forcibly stop the people from exercising this given right.”

on hu.ma.n rights.
“The Chinese constitution offers each individual full protection from the law. each person will be given their deserved rights…”

me stifling laughter so hard I blow Coke out my nose….

SO in the end, I basically decided that the constitution in China is a hodge-podge of words garnered or pirated from other countries, but the actual practice of law is nothing more than a fantasy.
If you would like to know more about Chinese laws, check out Randall Peerenboom and/or Stanley Lubman.

China and Inventions

Posted by w_thames_the_d on November 7, 2010

Before coming to China, I never new what they had invented here, but now after living here, each and every day I am banged over the head with it. When i first arrived, my chinese friends educated me and I believed. There is ice cream, chopsticks, stuff like that.
Now, I have however a different respect or lack thereof for their supposed claims. Yes, I believe they invented the chopsticks, (no monkeys did not patent it so they lost their rights) and yes they may have invented the umbrella (same as above), but oftentimes I hear some half baked “chinese expert” ,(digression alert— based upon the link here, that I found due to this awesome website—-. And what this link, or this one reconfirmed for me is that academia in China sucks and the garbage they write or supposedly write is at best plagiarized and at worst outright fraud— ouch!!!), I tend to be very skeptical.

All kidding aside…. what I mean to say is that I dont trust the experts here. Due to face saving, they will do and say whatever, all to make their history sound better. Like the other day in some cave in china they found some rocks in the corner by a gourd and the ‘scientist’ proclaimed it the first refrigerator- wtf? And if thats not enough, what about the scientist who found dog feces on an ancient Chinese tile and said that they were the first to make ‘shit on a shingle’, ok maybe the last one was a fabrication of my tired mind, but i hope you get my ;point.

but I really do enjoy it here, eventhough my blog access is blocked by these rttn bstrd chcms!!!

Here is a shot of those buckets that Chinese use to retreive used cooking oil from the restaurants. This stuff is usually recycled and the cigarette butts and removed, then reserved….
