China is not ready for prime time…

Posted by w_thames_the_d on November 8, 2010

I was going to start this rant addressing the issue that although the west has dumped tons of cash into China trying to help her modernize and she really has done so, but, is she really ready for prime time? I was going to talk about an article I read in the chinadaily about ‘filipinas’ coming to China as maids had an odd tone that showed China’s ignorance of nuance and subtlety regarding other countries and political correctness. But I’m not in the mood for it, so I am just going to tell you a story, this to me is China…

Remember when you were a kid and there was that one family with a bazillion kids who lived near the outskirts of town? The kids all had buzz hair cuts in the summer supposedly as it kept them cooler in the heat. And this family was usually clothed in items found from various garage sales or the local Goodwill. The dad was creepy, had buck teeth and dirty hair and nails and the kids emulated his skills with hygiene.
Every summer their cousins would come from out of town and upon arrival nearly 25 people would pile out of the old Ford FairLane and join the ‘weirdo clan’. Together they’ buy cheap greasy buckets of chicken, suck it to the bones and their odd father would shoo away the local cats, kicking at them with the over-sized bowling shoes that he always wore on his days off. You and your friends would drive by on your bicycles with the banana seat and stare and think wooo, those people are odd, and laugh and peddle off.
Every now and again your mom would make you go to play with that creepy family, maybe take them to the mall. You and your friends would complain, be embarrassed to be seen with them, but you’d obey your mom. So you guys would all trudge off to the local mall where you’d shop for hockey gear and footballs and that boy from the weirdo family would look at protective helmets and wrist pads for rollerblading or worse yet, ping pong paddles. Your sisters would shop for purses and watches while the weirdo families daughter always seemed to smear the makeup on her face and tossle her hair making her look like lady taz (pic).
In the end they would try to buy your friendship, offer to buy you some cookies and such, maybe you accepted , maybe you declined, but it always ended the same way. You’d walk home with them, smile and tell them how fun it was-promise to do it again. Then after you dropped them off, you and the other cool kids would roll your eyes in pity and walk home muttering under your breath…
-damn those are some sorry bastards….

that family is China….

My Favorite Store

I love to photograph this place. There is always action and to me it epitomizes much of Chinese life. The shop owners seem nice and it exemplifies much of the spirit of the people here.

Evil in China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on November 8, 2010

Here is an excerpt of a story about China. A young girl was born, and the family wanted a boy supposedly resorted to sticking a needle in her brain, presumably to kill her. The girl lived, but with brain damage. What type of evil brings people to do this to a child?

excerpt:
“Jane Macartney in Beijing

Chinese people are so desperate for a son that when baby Pingping was born it is thought her relatives tried to kill her by jamming a needle into her head. Her death would have allowed the parents to try again under the strict “one couple, one child” family planning policy.

The little girl did not die. Now aged 11, she had surgery this week to remove the needle that doctors believe was the cause of the her mental deficiency.

The deputy director of the neurosurgery department at the military hospital where the girl was treated, in the southwestern city of Chengdu, said there was a common belief in the countryside that sticking a needle into the head would result in death. “This is evil,” said Kuang Yongqin, who lead the surgical team. The mother of Pingping (not her real name) said that she intended to bring charges against family members who may have been responsible for the attempted murder of her daughter. Police advised Yang Xiaohui to keep the needle, as well as a scan that showed the object buried in her daughter’s head.”

Picking on China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on November 8, 2010

Damn! Sometimes it just seems as if everyone is picking on you…
First the Chinese are told that they can only have one little rice/crumb snatcher per family, which is bad enough. Then…
recent tests show that over 40 million Chinese are infertile, double damn! Or maybe its just natures way of saying, ‘hey China you already have too many people.’

excerpt
“More than 40 million people in China are suffering infertility on the mainland and the number is still increasing, found the latest epidemiology study. Factors like heavy workloads, stress, environmental pollution and unhealthy lifestyles are known to be related to a rising infertility level, said Huang Hefeng, director of the Zhejiang reproductive medical center.

I love My Kindle

Posted by w_thames_the_d on November 8, 2010

This has nothing to do with China, but Kindles are great. I now possess more volumes of literature and useless knowledge that a human could ever consume. I sit at work and punch the little ‘one click purchase’ button and obtain books from Tolstoy, to Indian poems, Buddhism, China etc. Damn I am so pleased right now.
