Religion in China- Why Not

Posted by w_thames_the_d on November 13, 2010

Somewhere I read that China has never had real religion (I am not considering animism a religion of any sort). The idea was that China has had 5000 years of history, give or take a few, but has never developed nor followed a religion as a country. I know they have had incidences of Buddhism, but does anyone know why they as a country have never either cozied up to any religion nor had one standard religion for their country?
-my question is more historical then contemporary in nature.
