Who’s Your Daddy?- DNA Testing

Posted by w_thames_the_d on November 24, 2010

Here is a cool link- http://gizmodo.com/5698223/get-your-dna-analyzed-for-99,
its for a little kit which will test your DNA for you. (btw this has no relevance to China). The kit usually costs around U$600 but you can get a discount, using this link and pay 99- caveat there is a 5 dollar a month charge for something, which increases the total price to 150. It sounds cool, maybe tell you more than you want to know about yourself.

It may be cool to use and interesting, but to me one’s accomplishments or lack thereof are best exemplified in the movie GATTACA , where we are shown that ones heart and desire are what truly matter most.

Going Green in China- My Trash Dilemma

Posted by w_thames_the_d on November 24, 2010

I love the planet, but I live in China, so i have a dilemma. I purchased some batteries, but of course, out of a four pack, only 2 worked, so the others must be disposed of. I know that batteries supposedly have toxic substance in them, ie lead, cadmium, and should be properly disposed of. But then again I live in China.
So I thought, “ok self, in my hand I hold two batteries which are in need of disposal. And also, on the table is a broken glass in need of disposal. Batteries supposedly have toxic chemicals in them, these are required for the proper functioning of the batter, but these have never worked. So, self, in all probability, that broken glass on the table has more lead and cadmium than this battery ever did…what should I do? Discard the batteries with the normal trash and put the glass in the biohazard waste? Put both in the biohazard waste? Chuck them both?”

I waited for a reply from my alter ego and got none…

Its great to explore the realities of China first hand.

Shanghai Pollution Reaches a New High

Posted by w_thames_the_d on November 24, 2010

Here is an excerpt from the Chinadaily about the pollution in Shanghai. In Beijing for the past three weeks, (except this week) it was horrible as well.

” SHANGHAI – China’s largest metropolis has suffered from high levels of pollution since early November, with pollution index figures far higher than those recorded during the six months of the World Expo. As of Wednesday, the city has witnessed its air pollution index passing 100 for eight days this month, the worst readings in the past five years.

China’s environmental standards rate a reading below 50 as “excellent”, from 50 to 100 as “good” and above 100 as “polluted”.The latest pollution occurred on Monday when the index reached 107. On Nov 13 it skyrocketed to 370, the highest level in the past decade. When the index exceeds 300, even healthy people are likely to experience reduced endurance during physical activities, and are likely to suffer strong irritations and other symptoms.

No Chinese At the Nobel Awards- What a Pity

Posted by w_thames_the_d on November 24, 2010

Liu Xiaobo won the Nobel Prize but cannot pick it up, he’s under the lock and key of China’s ruling communist party. I wont say much about the actual award, its not the point, but how telling is it of China to keep even this guy’s family from attending the ceremonies. Read the excerpt below:

“OSLO, Norway – Only one of about 140 Chinese activists invited by the wife of jailed Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo has confirmed he will attend the prize ceremony in Oslo, according to an organizer of the guest list. Others have been stopped from leaving China or placed under tight surveillance amid a crackdown on dissenters following the prize announcement, several activists told The Associated Press.

Nobel officials said last week that none of Liu’s relatives were expected to travel to Oslo to collect the prize on Liu’s behalf. But his wife, Liu Xia, had invited scores of activists and luminaries to attend the Dec. 10 ceremony in an open letter posted online.

Wan Yanhai, who fled to the United States in May after increasing official harassment of his AIDS advocacy group, is the only person on that list to confirm his attendance.

“I heard many people on the list were put on a blacklist and were not allowed, or their family members not even allowed, to leave China. It’s a horrible situation,” Wan told AP by phone Wednesday from Philadelphia, where he lives.”

In a Move Defying Logic Russia and China Move to …

Posted by w_thames_the_d on November 24, 2010

The geniuses at Chinese and Russian think tanks have decided that logic need not play a role in their planning processes any longer. What they are doing is ‘renouncing the US dollar’-see below, and trading in local currencies only. wtf…
To me this is a shocker as it defies logic. i was taught that the point of international exchange is to trade a good of value for another good of equal value…
Well maybe their move is not that illogical, after all, china will be shipping batteries that last a day, glasses filled with lead and cadmium for a currency that is currently worth…..

“St. Petersburg, Russia – China and Russia have decided to renounce the US dollar and resort to using their own currencies for bilateral trade, Premier Wen Jiabao and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin announced late on Tuesday. “
