Why Do I Stay in China- The Short Version

Posted by w_thames_the_d on December 8, 2010

My dad is a big fan of china- he’s never been here of course. And i was relating to him the story of a friend of mine who works for well I better not say, but its a powerful force here in China. This woman was date raped by an leader, then promoted to keep her silent. My dad felt I was bad-mouthing this place….he asked why I stay.
My response is that first and foremost, sane people need to keep you guys informed of what is going on here. If we dont, then who will? The chicom media, the chinadaily? I think it best if those of us who live here, continue to do so, gather into and then one day write a book or just spread the truth of this place. Apart from this, for me this place is
Incredible in terms of the level of visual/audio stimulus and overload. My life here in China, is like watching a soap opera, live, uncut and unedited, this place is like some horrific psyche experiment gone wrong, you cant even imagine humans would behave like the chinese do,  I have seen:
-lesbians duke it out in the streets
-men beat their wives at a bus stop
-women beat men
-gang fights
-corruption
-prostitution
-drug abuse
-dirty cops
-greed
-all of the seven deadly sins
-shake downs
-chaos
And that was just at lunch time today…
I am serious, if you come from the west , by that I mean civilization, coming to china is like being in the wild west, or visiting that one bar in the star Wars episode. Its like another world, everything you have been taught is wrong when coming to china- you dont chew with your mouth shut, you do spit on the sidewalk, poop/pee in the streets, you do lie, cheat steal, you dont hold doors open, you dont respect women, you dont wait for pedestrians to cross the road, buildings and all goods are not made to last, safety is not first, food is not necessarily made to be edible, drugs are not real… this list goes on and on.
So, coming from a normal/sane/civilized society, China is like some fantasy. For me its relatively safe- till my blog is found, and I, for he most part can sit and observe.
Imagine it this way. YOU have to wait till Thursday at 7 to see whats going on in the lives of your favorite soap star, be it treachery, greed, licentiousness, whereas all I have to do is step outside.
I love China.

Chinese Are Not Interesting- Talking to Chinese

Posted by w_thames_the_d on December 8, 2010

According to local press, Chinese feel more isolated, lonely and depressed. They find it hard to make friends in China and to a certain extent are very tribal in nature, they dont trust anyone outside of their clan.
Now imagine these tribal people going to a foreign country like the USA or one in Europe, their problems are much more grave. For instance, a strong basis for friendship is typically shared values, beliefs or life experiences, among others.
My Chinese friends have told me that they fear going to foreign countries as they have none of the above and thus dont think they can bond with the locals. In retrospect I believe they are correct. After all, what do we really have in common:

you- hey china-man whats up
chinaman- ni hao , hello
long pause cuz you have no common interests
you- hey did you watch the game the other day
chinaman- uh no, i only play ping pong
more silence
china-man- hey did your grand parents starve to death during the great leap forward?
you- my grand parents are from philly
china-man – so they didnt commit cannibalism on others kids to survive eh?
you- no, i think they are vegans anyway
chinaman- oh ok, well, how about the 60-70’s did your parents get their tongues gouged out of their heads with pliers all because they didnt like mao enough?
you- no, they were smoking pot and having sex
-chinaman – ohok, didnt have any family members slaughtered in Ti.a.anmen in 89 did ya?
you- uh no, at that time we were on vacation
china man- oh ok
you- yeah um..
– chinaman- im going to get some rice
you- im going to get a grand slam breakfast at Dennys
bye
bye

Chinese are Odd-Living and Working in China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on December 8, 2010

Chinese can be odd and no not in the sense that they :slurp noodles, spit on the sidewalk, or in buses or restaurants or subways, nor in how they always want to stop at the top of stairs to talk or in front of elevator doors, to chat, yes that is annoying, but there is more. Chinese have no sense of autonomy or know how to make decisions.

Yesterday I was going to the gym. The street was dead and the sidewalks too. There was only me and literally hundreds of yards of space, no one around. So i turn a corner and some Chinese guy walks up behind me.

Im thinking, wrf. the guy has the whole street to himself and he’s literally walking at my heel. so i move to the right, he does it too, i go left , him too. I spit, he spits, i pause he goes slower. The guy wasnt shadowing me nor robbing me, thats just how Chinese roll- they need a guide, need to be told what to do. its as if he were left on the street by himself he’d curl into a ball and wait for someone to show him how to behave, what to do.

You see this at the gym, or buses as well. You can be all alone, 50 seats around you, and some guy will come and take the chair next to you or directly opposite, its kind of freaky.
