Understanding China, One Blog at a Time

An American in China

My Company in China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on January 19, 2011

A friend and I started a company in China. Its not as hard as one may assume. The Chinese lack the ability to analyze a good business plan, and being Chinese mostly focus on relationships. Thus, when a couple of well educated white men explain a ‘sure fire , world class business idea!’ They listen, and offer money.
The process of starting a business is easy if you do so from Hong Kong. My partner resides in that region, so that is what we did. The problem was not in forming the company, but finding cabpalbe Chinese lawyers to do the paperwork for us. The guys in Hong Kong wanted too much, so I had a friend of mine do it for me from here.
In this respect, knowing people in the mainland is invaluable. Although the people in Hong Kong may be more familiar with western customs, they have less political clout, especially her in Beijing.
