Mencius and the Mandate of Heaven in China

Mencius promoted the concept of the Mandate of Heaven, (the original idea actually dates to the much earlier period of the Zhou Dynasty) meaning that if the ruler did not perform properly, the people would be morally right in seeking his removal, even through violent means.
