HIgh Rate of Drunken Driving in China- The Chinese Trade the Opium Pipe for the Bottle?

Posted by w_thames_the_d on May 5, 2011

Here is a sobering stat from China. According to the chinadaily “Statistics show that from December 2006, more than 200,000 cases of drunk driving had been reported just in Beijing,”. WTF? 200,000 cases of drunken driving in one city? To put this in perspective, the whole state of California had only 214,000 dui’s in 2008. As a matter of fact, this means that Beijing China had more DUI’s than: Alabama, plus Alaska, plus Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia and Hawaii ALL together!
Have the Chinese substituted the opium pipe for the bottle?

Apparently the allowed blood-alcohol concentration in the US is 0.08% (more than 4 drinks, or the highest BAC allowed worldwide), in China however you’ll get cited for a single drop of alcohol. Seriously, if you have only sniffed a beer, they’ll fine you. (BAC is 0.02%, less than one drink)

I was going to say that it may also have something to do with the amount of police officers per capita, but apparently the US has twice as many as China (US: 233 per 100,000, China: 120 per 100,000)

Yeah our BAC content allowable is high, that’s because we are proud Americans. Raw boned people of vision, passion and desire to have a little whiskey…..
Actually drinking and driving sucks and tons of people die each year on American roads due to this. Beijing, it woiuld seem, is even worse….
