Understanding China, One Blog at a Time

An American in China

Starbucks Invades China

Chinese love Starbucks. Something about paying over five US dollars for a frothy mug of hazle nut goodness makes them feel superior to the locals toiling away for crap wages. That and the ability to perch themselves behind an Ipad, hard as those are to purchase- sarcasm. Anyway, Starbucks will have about 1500 stores here in a few years or so they say. I guess this is just another great leap for mankind. The more big business that enter china, the less the world can complain about the selling of babies, the killing of innocents and the thug financing.

I do go to Starbucks from time to time and I am amazed. I’ve seen girls carry two to three Iphone 4’s, every designer bag available. I’ve seen man bags, Prada shoes, Ferrari 458 Italias, Bentleys and every make of Audi, BMW, and Mercedes. Even a clan of high level “working girls.” Everyone has an Ipad and everyone is privileged. Or so it seems.

Starbucks is for sure a different animal here. No longer is it a place to actually drink ok coffee and read a book in air conditioning on a hot day. It’s turned into the Ivy League club house for today’s emperors and empresses.

Well if anything at least the shorts are short this season.
