Beijing’s House Quality so Poor “Many New Houses Must Be Torn Down in Ten Years”

Posted by w_thames_the_d on July 5, 2011

A local official has been quoted as saying that “Many of Beijing’s new houses will have to be torn down in ten years due to poor quality.”
Construction quality is always an issue in China and housing may be one of the most glaring examples. During the formation of China in ’49 and shortly thereafter, the party decided to make houses with a fifty year lifespan. In China’s hurry to make a buck it would appear that they now construct houses that will not even last that long.

I suspect this has more to do with the fact that most houses will *anyway* be torn down within ten years due to the explosive growth. If you already know that in advance, why build them to last half a century or even more?

Great another 10 years of high GDP for a bunch of slackers, then they make another bunch of shit partments, and then those get torn down again and again and again. My shit suburbian home in DEADMONTON, is more sturdy than this.
