Crappy Quality Catching Up With China’s Infrastructure

Posted by w_thames_the_d on July 9, 2011

The other day an escalator went haywire and xinhua was quick to point fingers. They proclaimed the name Otis in an apparent attempt to swing the focus from the idea that it was not the Otis made elevator (manufactured in China) who was at fault, but shoddy Chinese maintenance.
Flash forward and once again we hear that a foreign owned oil company is to blame, quoting the communists, for a horrible oil spill. At issue are the lack of credibility of the party as it controls all media and does not want to look inept, especially before shoving Xi Jinping into the drivers seat next year. The problem, however, is that food scandals, tales of bribery and shitty Chinese quality abound.
The funny thing is that these Chinese people have only been building for about ten to fifteen years and machines usually last much longer, if properly maintained. But this is China and if you couple shitty quality with horrible maintenance, you get disasters.
The lesson to learn is that a double whammy of local lack of know how and poor appreciation of doing the right thing means that buying a toxic toy is easily rectifiable, you toss it in the trash, but what does one do with a bridge, or high speed train?
That’s right, imagine it. Tens of thousands of miles of track or tens of miles of concrete lay like the boogey man in the closet, just waiting to spring from their sleep to ensnare us in the throes of death. My question is, why do we contract these people to build things like bridges for us?

Interesting View of Chinese Life

Posted by w_thames_the_d on July 9, 2011

Rant from Gowron who is living in China now, but will be leaving in five months.
” No more screeching women in the streets growling like grunting bears in heat. No More loud explosive tirades of childish trite arguments over 1 RMB off something already costing 1 RMB. No more stupid silly teenager guards at translations texing their Q Q, or Baido, when they should be serving me. And no more girly men, Oh thank God, That Sanlu is some nasty shit, the hormones from the melaminme have dried up the “male’s” testostrone secretion. Not that I have problems with Gays, but sheesh.

Photo of Why Cancer is Leading Cause of Death in China-Beijing Smog Photos

Posted by w_thames_the_d on July 9, 2011

Cancer is the leading cause of death in Bejing China. These photos tell why lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths here. The photos are both from this year and show how bad the pollution can be. Lately it seems to have a milky tinge as it used to be darker. Some days it is so bad that my eyes will water and a distinct toxic odor is pretty pronounced.

“”They were from another part of the country and the husband had gone to Jinhua City in Zhejiang province to find a job. When the wife insisted on getting a job too, he beat her up for not obeying him.

“He was seen elbowing her until she fell to the ground, and then slapping her and kicking her repeatedly, before dragging her by the hair several metres away. ”

How China is Impacting Africa

Posted by w_thames_the_d on July 9, 2011

From The Beijing Consensus-new (Stefan Halper)

But as Senegalese journalist Adama Gaye remarks, China’s sudden interest has little to do with philanthropy.42 The Chinese footprint in Africa is yielding negative effects, with serious human costs that often far outweigh the benefits.43 Henning Melber, an Africanist at the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation, argues that much of China’s presence in Africa is really just “old wine in new bottles.” After all, he comments, “the Chinese penetration only presents the ugly face of predatory capitalism, which for far too long has already abused the dependency of the majority on the continent.”44

China and Cancer- China Facts

Posted by w_thames_the_d on July 9, 2011

Interesting post from here
“According to the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the burning of coal is responsible for 70 percent of the emissions of soot that clouds out the sun in so much of China; 85 percent of sulfur dioxide, which causes acid rain and smog; and 67 percent of nitrogen oxide, a precursor to harmful ground level ozone. Coal burning is also a major emitter of carcinogens and mercury, a potent neurotoxin. Coal ash, which contains radioactive material and heavy metals, including chromium, arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury, is China’s number one source of solid industrial waste. The toxic ash that is not otherwise used in infrastructure or manufacturing is stored in impoundments, where it can be caught by air currents or leach contaminants into the groundwater.
