US Debt and China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on July 29, 2011

How dumb will the Chinese feel if the US defaults on its debt? That is one of the risks of holding US paper. Of course they can complain and maybe the value of our dollar will decline, which of course will make our products cheaper…..

China’s Oil Rigs in Bohai Still Leaking Oil

Posted by w_thames_the_d on July 29, 2011

China and quality are mutually exclusive terms. And now it seems that the horrific oil spill in Bohai is continuing as they have not yet controlled it.

Foreign Leaders and Sneakers- China’s Wen Jia Bao

Posted by w_thames_the_d on July 29, 2011

Today I browsed the Chinadaily and saw an article about China’s premier honoring the dead from the most recent wreck. One of the things I noticed was his sneakers, for some reason I thought it didn’t really go well with his dress pants and shirt.
Then I was surfing mop.com and saw that they have an entire page devoted to the shoes that the little man wears to such disasters. I’m unclear as to whether its the same pair, but those shoes sure have a lot of miles on them…

Chinese Taxi

Posted by w_thames_the_d on July 29, 2011

Chinese seem to pile into whatever vehicle, be it powered by man or beast, just to get from point A to point B. This lady was not so elegantly dethroning herself from one such vehicle.

What Very Unhealthy Pollution Looks Like- Smog in China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on July 29, 2011

Yesterday according to this site, the pollution rating in Beijing was 266 or very unhealthy. Actually, to me it didn’t seem that bad, which lets you know how serious of a problem air contamination is here. Even today after a torrential downpour the air quality is 131 or unhealthy for sensitive groups. How does all that rain fail to cleanse the air here?
As you can see in the pics, the pollution in BJ is not getting any lighter. the only thing I have noticed is that the pollution in ’08 was dingy brown and now its more of a white with a chemical odor and taste.

It’s Not Just Me, David Sedaris on China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on July 29, 2011

David Sedaris is hilarious and I think I’ve read most of his stuff. He came to China and did a piece on in
and if you’ve ever been here I am sure you can relate…:
from here:
-David Sedaris
“What initially put me off was the food. I’ll eat it if the alternative means starving…

I saw wads of phlegm glistening like freshly shucked oysters on staircases and escalators. I saw them frozen into slicks on the sidewalk and oozing down the sides of walls. It often seemed that if people weren’t spitting, they were coughing without covering their mouths, or shooting wads of snot out of their noses. …. “We Chinese think it’s best just to get it out,”…a woman told me over dinner one night. She said that, in her opinion, it’s disgusting that a westerner would use a handkerchief and then put it back into his pocket….”Well, it’s not for sentimental reasons,” I told her. “We don’t hold on to our snot for ever. The handkerchief’s mainly a sanitary consideration.”

“Last month I saw a kid shit in the produce aisle of our Chengdu Walmart,” a young woman named Bridget told me.

The supermarket cashier holds out your change and you take it thinking, “This woman squats and spits on the floor while shitting and blowing snot out of her nose.” You think it of the cab driver, of the ticket taker and, finally, of the people who are cooking and serving your dinner.

Most of the restaurants in China to me smelled dirty, though what I was smelling was likely some unfamiliar ingredient,
