Old Chinese Guy Selling Stuff- China Photo

Posted by w_thames_the_d on July 31, 2011

A hunk of concrete or grass and a Chinese person= entrepreneur. In China you will see that the place is packed with entrepreneurs disguised as people hawking everything from peanuts and screws to nails and truck axles. This gaggle of Chinese entrepreneurs lend a certain amount of charm/frustration as one bangs their knees upon the things these people toil away to sell. Actually they are the heart of China but due to the fact that they don’t pay taxes or a sufficient amount of bribes, the cops dislike them….

Chinese Construction Crews Argue Then Dynamite One Another- 4 Dead

Posted by w_thames_the_d on July 31, 2011

Loss of life is always sad, and here there has been quite a bit of it lately. In this incident one has to shake their head in wondderment. Its almost like back in the days of he Red Guards where competiting factions literally slaughtered one another to see who loved Mao more.
In this news bit, two construction crews got upset with one another over a parking space of all things. One of the crews being upset did the only logical thing and pulled out some dynamite and blasted the other crew killing 2 instantly and 2 died on the way to the hospital.
When I first moved here the Chinese said how it would be horrible to be able to own guns like the US, but I thought this odd. For sure we have tons of crime but are guns the cause. Then I realized that what they mean is that if Chinese in China had guns, the place would be a mad house….

Look Out Below!- Shitty Shanghai Construction Leads to Glass Bombs…

Posted by w_thames_the_d on July 31, 2011

Just to prove that the once renowned whore of the orient, Shanghai, has construction befitting the middle kingdom, they have had a problem with a funny little thing called ‘glass bomb’s. Essentially glass bombs are nothing less than big assed hunks of glass falling from tall assed skyscrapers..wtf?
Yeah, check the story here and I blogged it before, but Shanghai has a problem in buildings and even subways. The glass literally shatters and or falls from the flame, causing nothing less than a heavy scythe rocketing towards terra firma.
Hmmm I wonder how all of the dumbasses who outsourced construction to these people now feel..

Update on Violence in China’s Muslim Area of Xinjiang

Posted by w_thames_the_d on July 31, 2011

There is much news about Kashgar in Xinjiang. What we know was that the weekend saw a knife attack or two and a bombing this afternoon. The supposed number of casualties run from 14 to 100 (R. kadeer) but who really knows.
The guardian shows the PLA marching into the area, flag held aloft, but some sources seem to hint that things are going pretty badly for the Han. Wantchinatimes ran a headline saying the violence continues and at midnight local I combed the chinadaily and saw no news meaning that either it is really bad there still or they are crafting their response.

Chinese Lawyers Not Allowed to Represent Victims of Fatal Train Crash

Posted by w_thames_the_d on July 31, 2011

China is having a rough go of it. Since the Olympics yanked the blanket of secrecy from this place, it is now more obvious then ever that they have some serious challenges. I am not saying they need to democratize, for I now wonder and doubt if they could really handle it, but maybe they could do things differently.
The problem is that the system is set up as it was thousands of years ago. Historically one little fat man owned all the land, all the pigs and all the people, and now its 9 little fat men, so in a sense, I guess you can say China has advanced.
One area they are weak is the issue of hum rghts… but this may not only be a China thing. As a matter of fact, the notion of ‘asian values’, is a concept that economic growth comes first and then they worry about these people as humans.
I guess we will have to see how that manifests itself in China. Oh yeah, the reason for the post is that Chinese authorities have told the lawyers of the people who died in the wenzhou train crash not to represent the victims….damn I am sooooo happy I was not born here

Dog on the Menu in China-

Posted by w_thames_the_d on July 31, 2011

Chinese don’t like to admit that they eat dog, at least admit it in front of foreigners. For instance a colleague and I went to a local restaruant and she cackled saying dog was on the menu , ‘Dog! I want some!” she yelled.
I was like, “oh”
‘oh I forgot ” she said. “we usually dont like to eat dog in front of foreigners, during the Olympics this was told to us…

I respect the fact she respected my wishes and it is her counry and she can eat as she wishes, but I found it odd that in front of ‘foreign friends’ Chinese will not usually admit that Chinese do eat dog. For instance, in one university I visited, a woman from Shanghai adamantly denied that Chiense do eat dog. To me the real issue is that they should be honest. If they are going to eat it then why deny this fact? Are they that neurotic? I could see if they were trying to ease our discomfort as my friend, but to steadfastly deny it? No wonder this place has little credibility.

China’s Crazy Nationalism and Her Children

Posted by w_thames_the_d on July 31, 2011

China does not like to brainwash her people, she merely likes to tell them her side of the story, over and over and over and over and over again. As a matter of fact they tell it so often that they sometimes or usually even believe what they say.
But uncle c is also very clever and seems to wish to ‘educate’/contaminate the minds of the youth lest they fall too far from the fray. For instance, Every school kid in China has to memorize passages of history where the Japanese are called devils. They are also taught in the ‘things that Chinese must know” that communism was based upon 100 years of foreign aggression.- China Shakes the World by James Kynge pp221-1.
Hmm, I wonder if this idea of polluting/teaching the youth is consistent with China’s peaceful rise. In terms of the goals of the party, maybe when Mao was alive it was true but now one has to wonder. But anyway, these folks are our friends now aren’t they….
