Cold Water, Ignorance and Living in China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on August 2, 2011

Those of us fortunate to find ourselves victims/temporary residents of the center of the universe – China, have to put up with some minor inconveniences from time to time. No I’m not referencing the onset of lung and or stomach cancer from the toxic air and food, those are a constant nuisance. No, my rant today is something very dissimilar, or is it?
For the second day in a row my complex has no hot water. If you are Chinese, at this point you have your slimy chopsticks embedded so far into your grungy chomper that you are saying , ‘no hot water- so what’? But alas those in civilization will feel my pain. How is it that we the wonderful inhabitants of planet earth in the 2011th year of our Lord have no hot water with which to cleanse ourselves?
I guess I should be happy, my last place had bi-monthly black outs from crappy power lines that kept failing. And the place next to me lost their power for a week, yeah 7 days with no power. And it’s not as if I live in the Chinese equivalent of Telephone;hone road in Houston, I’m with the high brows.
Which leads me to wonder how the Chinese do it. I had a student at one of the premier universities here whose mom a Chinese doctor told her that daily baths were unhealthy. Taking this advice to heart, she showered every fortnight or two weeks. Armed with this knowledge I trudged down to the maintenance hooch in my fair dwelling to see if they were imposing some ‘traditional chinese medicine’ on us vz limited bath time.
Braving the dark stairs I shoved through the rickety door to be met by an odd looking man with a head shaped like a punch bowl. My presence alarmed him and he quit eating in mid slurp, a tangle of noodles draped from his ponderous lip.
In halting Chinese I explained my situation to the man.
“NO hot water?” he smiled.
‘none for two days.’
picks up chopsticks slurps again, nods at me
‘how do i bathe’?
‘wait till get hot water’ slurp slurp slurp
‘when will that be?’
he shrugs then hefts the bowl to has hole and eyes as wide as street cars quaffs the delicacy then cleanses his liver purple lips on his sleeve. ‘two days’
‘what do I do before then? one has to bathe right?’
“ah foreigner like bath each day.’ he laughs as if a more absurd concept had existed.
‘dont’ you bathe each day?”
“me?’ he said noncommittally

I knew all was lost. It’s like Paul Midler says in the book Poorly Made in China. He references the fact that he was in a facility in China that made shampoo, and he was trying to educate the local workers about how to properly bottle it. They had been stuffing their dirty fingers into the vats producing the stuff with little or no thought given to sanitary practices. Then he figured it out. These poor workers never used shampoo, they had little to no knowledge of its purpose and proper hygiene. Looking at the sweaty man before me, his brown shirt clinging to the small form with slat rings marking days of sweat and use, I learned one more thing about China and again thanked pangu, the god of the wicked for not making this my birthplace.

How creepy would it be to look out your window and see this dude’s junk. But this is China so I’m sure they either have no laws against public atrocities such as this, or they are lax in obeying them and more lax in their enforcement.
Anyway, this shot came from mop.com and I thought I’d share the creeeeeppp…

Comment on The book “Tiger Mother” AKA Diary of a Sadist

Posted by w_thames_the_d on August 2, 2011

Some lady who was lucky enough to escape China wrote a book about parenting of all things. The book is called the Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother or ‘how to legally abuse and profit from your kids, after all, they owe their lives to you’.
After living here and seeing just how ‘tiger mothers’ parent their kids I decided to pass up on the book. I figure my hard earned cash could be better spent on a tattoo of Mao, or an ant farm, or maybe a couple boxes of Ho Ho’s.
But somehow I came across this book and then automatically went to the reviews. I found one particularly telling comment from another Asian -American woman. Here is part of her reply also known as Suck on this tiger tang!!

by,

a mom

“As an Asian American woman and a “Chinese” mother, I find this book disturbing in its negative stereotyping of Chinese and Chinese American parents. I have known dozens of “Chinese” mothers – immigrants and American born alike – and none who have parented as this author. As a Harvard undergraduate during the years that the author was there, I do not recall the author attending any of the many meetings or social occasions held by the Asian students on campus. Although the book discusses the author’s “Chinese” upbringing, and refers to the Chinese food that she loved as a child and the “high culture” of her Chinese ancestors, there is little in the book to indicate that the author is, or considers herself to be, part of a larger community or network of Asians or Chinese in America, an affiliation that’s critical if the author’s voice is to be heard as at all representative of that community. Chinese and Asian parents run the gamut, and there are certain to be extremes, as in any race.

The author’s statement at the beginning of the book that she uses the term “Chinese mother” loosely, and that the term “Chinese mother” can include non-Chinese mothers and even non-Chinese fathers, does not save her from a perception among many that she has exploited her ethnicity — and Chinese people — to sell this book. ”

Beijing Puts an Eye in the Sky in Supermarkets

Posted by w_thames_the_d on August 2, 2011

This site says that beneficent uncle c will be installing hidden cameras in supermarkets in order to ‘surveil for potential poisoners’. What they are trying to say is that large markets in Beijing must install an eye in the sky or a big brother for the chinese little brother….so that they can now watch our every movement even while shopping.
I admire the pluck of these guys and how the government seems to really want to look out for our safety but I have a few questions.
-aren’t the poisons usually put in the food before it gets to the market?
milk, cooking oil, steamed buns, fake buns, glow in the dark meat etc
-if they are so worried about our safety, can they put some of that cash into rear end cams for the high speed rail?
-if they really want to protect us couldn’t they put some of those cams in z n h… or the offices of local governmental officials or Chinese engineers?

In the end, this is China so it’s probably a good thing, after all, can these people really be trusted?
