Reality of Doing Business in China- Oil Spills, Fairness and Foreigners

Posted by w_thames_the_d on September 2, 2011

This article explains the realities of doing business in China. It’s often unfair, crooked and if you are a foreigner then watch out….

from here:

While none of these steps seem particularly unusual as a way to deal with an environmental disaster, they stand in stark contrast to China’s huge oil spill last summer, when a refinery fire at Dalian caused hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil to be released directly into the sea.
Thick black oil clogged the beached of Dalian and cleanup efforts were so haphazard that fisherman were sent out to scoop oil off the ocean surfaces with plastic pots and bare hands. But in striking contrast to the ConocoPhillips spill (where around 3,200 barrels of oil were released into the sea), no Chinese company was ever fined or found to be at fault for the environmental disaster in Dalian.
The refinery where the spill occurred was jointly owned by Dalian Port and by CNPC, China’s largest oil and gas producer. The city government led the cleanup efforts, with assistance from CNPC, and the government very publicly launched an investigation into the causes of the spill.

China Bans Flying Objects Including Pigeons in Muslim Xinjiang

Posted by w_thames_the_d on September 2, 2011

China is worried about Xinjiang, not just because it is filled with Muslims but because they really don’t trust them too much. Right now the area of xinjiang will be hosting some big event in this area which makes sense with ‘chinese characteristics’…Anyway, to ensure that no mishaps occur the reds are taking no chances. What they are doing is to prohibit all flying objects over the area even pigeons…wtf?
Yeah, not only can you not fly over the area but neither can patsy your pet bird….

Chinese Do Not Know Quality

Posted by w_thames_the_d on September 2, 2011

Chinese have a warped sense of value in terms of things like Chinese goods. Years of being sheltered from the cruel world has left them unable to distinguish between that which has built up value over the ages and … chinese junk.
The reason I say this is that you can point your feet into any store with the misfortune of selling only goods made and designed in China and will audibly gasp at the prices.
The Chinese, after spying an Apple product which sells for 600 civilized dollars does not realize that anything they make here is not only inferior in quality and design but should cost considerably less. But years of communist oppression has left them unable to do what civilized people have been doing for eons- ascertain value.
I’ve seen designed and made in Chinese clothing retailing for what a designer garment would cost and when asking friends why they’d spend so much they cheerfully reply the stuff is just as good.. oh is it?
Which leads me to the conclusion that Chinese, who sell their siblings for pennies do not really konw why and how a price is is derived….

China Invading our Privacy from Puddingandchopsticks.com

Posted by w_thames_the_d on September 2, 2011

Here is a reblog from puddingandchopsticks.com here. The author comes from the land of plenty and has good insight into the country. He’s not as snarky as the current author but brings the ‘oh really’? He’s got some great pics and did a good post on fake phones that I will probably blog over the weekend but you should visit his site nonetheless….

One big invasion of privacy.

August 26th, 2011 § 1
That’s is what China can be. Some will say that it is because there is so many people here. Which is true, however that probably is not an issue. It’s a cultural one. You grow up living, and most likely sleeping in the same bed as your parents and siblings if you were lucky to have them. Thus you assume that everyone else doesn’t care that you are 2 inches from their face..
So how does this pertain to me. Well, every time there is a knock on the door I freak out. Well, not really but you can’t help to get a little nervous. Most of the time is it the police making sure you are here and have a valid visa. But sometimes it’s a real person, and all of the time they want something.

Chinese Official ‘Stabs Himself to Death’ 11 Times?

Posted by w_thames_the_d on September 2, 2011

The chicoms are declaring that one of their own ‘stabbed himself to death’. The guy who did it worked on the ‘discipline committee’ which is an odd thing to have for chicoms. The ‘funny’ thing about the story is that the man ‘stabbed or slashed himself’ 11 different times in various locations such as the neck, abdomen and had wrapped the knife in a towel- no sense getting fingerprints on a weapon of your own death.
While the chicoms seem sure it was a suicide as the man was denied a promotion his family is not too sure.
I report , you decide….
