Dangerous China, Cops and Coal Miners

Posted by w_thames_the_d on September 4, 2011

The chinadaily said that being a cop in China has one of the highest risk factors for death. I find this interesting, for China. What I mean to say that as being an avid fan of everything from COPS to Reno 911, I have a decent idea of what a ‘normal’ cop does and the dangers he faces. But from what I’ve seen here the typical ‘chinese cop’, polices nothing more than the bribes they are owed and beats the non-beijingers who sell things in the street. That and extort funds from the illegal DVD sales people, but I have yet to see them bring on the ‘law’.

We all know what a corrupt place this is and illegal acts surround us, thus one would guess that with all the ‘opportunities’ for justice that a Chinese cop faces, he’d have his hands full. But alas the majority of cops I’ve seen here are huddled together er like a pride of cowardly lions as they bitch about the illegal taxis and then chat up the local restaurant owners.

I guess I should not complain for in a place like Sao Paolo or Rio its not uncommon to see those bad ass members of the Rota scooting along with machine guns at the ready. I once saw them taking down some drug dealers on the way to Sao Caetano on my way to work.

I do feel more safe here, although this place imho is way more corrupt than Brazil. In Brazil and Mexico, for instance, you may get nicked for a few bucks here and there but its hit and miss. In China however, its pervasive. In everything from getting a visa to applying for a patent to setting up a business you will have to give up some cash. A good friend of mine from latin America said the same thing. He said that this place had the feel of the type of environment where in order to get something you had to pay a little under the table…This is just Chinese living.

Lonely Chinese Men and No Women…

Posted by w_thames_the_d on September 4, 2011

How badly would it suck to be from China if you are a guy…
read this from here

He wants a wife, of course. But ask what kind of woman he seeks and Duan Biansheng looks perplexed.

“I don’t have any requirements at all,” said the 35-year-old farmer. “I would be satisfied with just a wife.” His prospects of finding one, he added, are “almost zero”. There are dozens of single men in Banzhushan village, perched high on a remote mountain peak in central Hunan province ? and not one unattached woman of marriageable age.

Study in China and Die- Chinese Students Catch Deadly Virus

Posted by w_thames_the_d on September 4, 2011

In an animal medical school in China 28 students were exposed to a horrible and crippling virus. The chinadialy reported the event but was light o detail , after all who wants to embarrass themselves by passing along the knowledge that you suck and do not take care of your students. Or it if was not this, then it was due to the negligence that is so prevalent but carefully ensconsed in the bosom of corruption.
China wonders why more foreigners don’t attend Chinese schools ,but now we know why….

Comment from Brewskie on China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on September 4, 2011

Oh shit! BYD’s hot rods with hamster wheel generators don’t put out as advertised. One less ivory back scratcher for ‘ol Buffy…

Oh darn. Another big shot US billionaire gets fleeced by a Chinese scam; Jon Paulson’s fund got doped $750 million by Sino-Forest, and is down almost 40% for the year.

Speaking of fraudulent Chinese companies, here’s a good post by WC. (The site he writes at, Top Secret Writers, is a dubiously-titled site of the kind I’d normally avoid, but this guy does his homework with piles of links. I sent you a prior post on China’s infrastructure, which was by far one of the best works I’ve seen done.)

http://www.topsecretwriters.com/2011/08/chinese-company-corruption-in-the-us-stock-market/

I don’t have the link, but I read way back that China has 170-some car companies – 17 which are considered “major” – and during the ’08 meltdown, not one of them went bankrupt. Hmmm….

Shanghai Slasher Kills One Child Wounds 8 More

Posted by w_thames_the_d on September 4, 2011

On Monday a woman at a daycare in China attacked a bunch of migrant kids in a school killing one and wounding 8. Last year we saw a spate of attacks on chinese kids at the hands of Chinese 40 somethings, products of the vicious cultural revolution. Is this phenomenon happening again?
The problem is that the kids were ‘migrant’ kids or kids not born in Shanghai so in the eyes of the Chinese they are less than useless. The locals disdain those workers who act as floating laborers and although these people are the backbone of society, they are mocked by the monied.

China does not play well with other countries and rights activists and animals. They also do not play well with oil. Once again there was an oil fire in their Dalian plant. story here

Lawless China Single Point for Fake Apple Products

Posted by w_thames_the_d on September 4, 2011

In the excerpt below it is alleged that the quantity of fake Apple goods made in China make it the single source for all fake Ipods and Iphones. While China sucks and in and of this stat alone they should be cut off from the world, how much of the fault lies within Apple. If the dumbasses there do not realize what China is capable of then screw them, for they have much of their outsourcing done in China. But I guess whether or not they assembled in China it would end up there anyway, so how much anger should one hold towards Apple.
from here

. (SBU) Whatever means counterfeiters are able to exploit, the numbers are compelling: Shruhan notes that customs seizure data definitively show that there is enough counterfeit production of Apple products in Guangdong to effectively make China the single source for the world’s fake iPods and iPhones, many of which are transshipped via Hong Kong to points onward.

China Running out of Energy

Posted by w_thames_the_d on September 4, 2011

China has quite a few issues not the lest of which are pollution, lack of energy, corruption and a host of other things. As they expand they seem to crack at the seems, their vulnerabilities obvious. Five southern provinces do not have enough energy and for the year they are nearly 15% short.
For those of you who think its all do to population, you are mistaken. China expends much more energy for unit of GDP growth than most countries. In addition, due to shoddy construction practices their buildings are inefficient and waste more energy than they should.
Although China has a low carbon town in Tianjin, which I have seen, it is not a harbinger of things to come.for all you hear about China’s green initiatives they are overblown and misunderstood by foreigners. The problem is they trust and believe the Chinese , they have not lived here. Chinese officials will promise the world and delver dust, its a land of smoke and mirrors.
So when China is low on energy I say it serves them right.
