Understanding China, One Blog at a Time

An American in China

Mimicry is Highest Form of Compliment

A new Chinese startup is knocking off a Chinese company which knocks of an American company….oh hell just read about it here…

This is great. A Chinese English teacher started a cell phone company whose business model is to ape an ‘Apple ape’, Xiaomi. Of course Xiaomi is much more than merely an Apple knockoff, but much of its initial buzz is related to just that.

In a land of Shanzhai or clever cloning, it should come as no surprise that companies are keen to copy Xiaomi’s success. Enter Smartisian, a wannabe Apple.

The company in question also seems to be more than a one trick pony and has created its own software a-la Xiami’s very own.

China is killing the cell phone startups with a cell phone cluster in southern provinces. Startup costs are next to nothing and just about all one needs to succeed is close at hand. This area is, after all, the birthplace of China’s shanzhai phone market.
