China Worlds Biggest Polluter- And Their Economy is only a Third of the USA

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 16, 2010

Yeah, they are a third the size of the USA, but pollute more, mother earth has to be crying.

from the Irish Times

POLLUTION: CHINA’S REMARKABLE economic rise over the past 30 years has come at an alarming price in environmental terms, but the world’s fastest-growing major economy is working hard to clean up the devastating pollution of its rivers, lakes and skies.

As became apparent at the failed Copenhagen climate summit, China is not only an economic powerhouse, its now the world’s largest polluter, emitting more carbon than the United States, from whom it assumed the mantle in 2007. The country is forced to live with the consequences of rapid industrialisation, most of it driven by burning fossil fuels.

Guangzho= Penal colony

Posted by w_thames_the_d on April 12, 2010

Guangzhou in China, I have been told, used to be a penal colony for the country. It was where they sent he miscreants and the people it felt it couldn’t control. Today Guangzhou has not changed much, it has many immigrants, Nigerians slinging heroin, and in general, a wide-open atmosphere.

Buying a House in China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on March 30, 2010

China has that crazy houkou thing, where you are a citizen of your state, and it is hard to do anything outside of your state, ie. receive health care, get an education etc.

So, add to this that buying a house is difficult as well. If you try to buy a house from outside your province or state, you must pay 100% of the value, the out of state banks will extend you no loan.

This would be like saying that you live in California, and want to buy a house in Philly, that you would have to pay the full price of the Philly home. Because, none of the Philly banks will trust your credit, nor offer you a loan…

Reporters in China Had the 3rd Most Dangerous Job

Posted by w_thames_the_d on March 26, 2010

Five years ago, being a reporter in China was only less dangerous than being a cop, and a coal miner.

From the BBC

“BEIJING, Nov 9 (Reuters) – Being a reporter is the third most dangerous occupation in China, the official Xinhua news agency said, second only to miners and policemen. “An increasing number of reporters are obstructed, scolded, even beaten during interviews,” Xinhua said in a late-night report seen on Thursday. To help journalists injured on the job, a hospital in the northeastern city of Shenyang had set up a foundation, it said. “We decided to set up the foundation to arouse people’s concern about reporters’ health and safety,” Xinhua quoted Zhang Chengpu, vice-director of Shengjing Hospital, as saying. “The foundation will help reporters to pay part of their medical fees if they were attacked or wounded by accidents while doing interviews around Shenyang,” Zhang added.

China Starts New Red Guard- Big Brother in China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on March 20, 2010

The China daily reports that in the province of Yunan, special ‘snitches’-their word, will be appointed to spy on students and inform others of their wanton ways. This is nothing unusual for China. During the cultural revolution, they had the red guard, which were Mao’s self appointed protectors. They did the same thing, sort of, they made sure that Mao’s word was upheld and that no one crossed him. The result was that the guard ended up killing and terrorizing hundreds of thousands of teachers, monied, and educated, basically and those who had ‘capitalist ways’ . Although the red guard focused on beating and ‘re-educating those older than them, this group seems to be focusin on their peers… for now. In China power always changes hands due to revolution, so I find this sort of thing dicey.

Modern Red Guard? Now

KUNMING – Schools in the capital of Yunnan province must appoint a handful of their students to monitor schoolmates and report any prohibited behavior in and out of school, Kunming’s education and public security bureaus have stated.

Head teachers of elementary, junior high and senior high schools will have to select two or three of the “snitches” to report cases of violence, Internet pornography use and other undesirable behavior to boost students’ safety, the latest joint notice by the bureaus stated.

Students aged between 12 and 17 who are found to have committed these offenses will be sent to boarding schools for lessons on the law, it said.

The notice follows a case of school violence on Nov 23 last year, when 11 boys at the No 1 Middle School of Kunming’s Guandu district filmed their beating of a girl before sharing the video with other students.
