Shanghai Ugly- Life in Shanghai

Posted by w_thames_the_d on December 18, 2009

Still here in Shanghai, people are quite polite, much better than my first time here. The European feeling comes through if you are in the downtown Puxi area. In general, however I disagree with the notion that it is sooo international, a good city, but not a Sao Paolo.

As for the saying that the women are more beautiful, havent seen that, still think Chongqing or the northeast have that honor. There they have better skin and facial structures.

Beverly Shanghai Billy’s- Shanghai Life and Flying in China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on December 17, 2009

Another quick post. Funny thing is that in China, there are the nouveau riche- think Texas quick buck oil billionaires here. It never ceases to amaze me that this type of person, who was lucky enough to have struck oil-USA, or coal -China, on his property, can be filthy rich in an instant.
Here the impact is that many of the older folks who lived through the cultural revolution- 1966-76, have nothing more than a high school education. But, through the miracles of guanxi, they have not allowed this to stand in the way of them forging ahead and acquiring a small fortune.
Today I was on the plane with a few of them. They are basically disheveled men, hair stuck on head like an afterthought, ambling east and west bound, no sense of direction. They sport Rolex’s, Rado’s and the like but as they say- you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.
I had the dis/pleasure of watching one of these today for about an hour. This man cleaned almost every orifice of his body with not less than three fingers, his friend, cleansing his nasal cavities on his shirt sleeves. Ahh business in China…
