Toxic Oil, China Knows Where but Refuses to Tell Them in Chengdu

Posted by w_thames_the_d on March 31, 2010

When Chna goes big, they go very big. So they annoucned that toxic oil is bing reused by restaurants all over China. The toxic swill of oil has aflotoxin, a cancer causing substance.

In Sichuan , Chengdu, to be exact, the govern;ment knows of 13 companies who have used it, but arent telling anyone. Caterin is a big industry there and they apparently dont want to scare or alarm the people. This is the communist mentality, to focus on comerce while putting human lives second.

excerpt:

“CHENGDU: Diners in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, who are upset over the local government’s delayed release of the names of 13 hot pot restaurants that may use illegal cooking oil, have accused officials of helping to cover up the truth to protect the city’s prime industry – catering.

On the same day, a netizen posted a list of 13 hot pot restaurants, which are the most famous in Chengdu.

Facing pressure from the public, the food safety office called an emergency press conference on Monday, announcing its version of events involving the 13 hot pot restaurants that allegedly use questionable oil.

While the food safety office’s list differed from the list previously posted online, it included several of the city’s most highly rated hot pot restaurants. However, Zhou Rong, chief of the city’s food safety office, did not acknowledge the 13 restaurants used illegal cooking oil, but asserted that they used synthetic sesame oil, which is made from corn oil and is edible.

Four more people died from toxic food in China. Who knows, maybe it is some bizarre communist party plot to phase out the one child policy and phase  in operation ‘Toxic take out’…

“XIAMEN – Four people died of food poisoning in east China’s Fujian Province on Friday, local authorities said.

The people died after eating stewed pig’s trotters with herbs taken from Heping County’s Jiufeng Mountain where they worked as tree planters, said a spokesman with the county publicity department.

Fake Green Peas in China-They are Even Cheating Mother Nature

Posted by w_thames_the_d on March 30, 2010

I have heard of them faking food, meats, eggs and such, the rumor mill is full of that type of information. But this is bizarre, faking peas…What else will the Chinese do for cash. Oh yeah, in China, its not a food safety incident till someone dies, wtf???

excerpt:

chinadaily

“BEIJING – Unsafe artificial green peas were found in Hunan province earlier this month, making the list of toxic food products in the country even longer, according to the local food safety watchdog. The problematic green peas appeared in the provincial capital of Changsha and Hengyang city, a local newspaper reported over the weekend.

“The peas were an unnatural color and had a penetrating odor. After 20 minutes of cooking, the peas did not turn soft but the water turned green,” the report said.

The peas were first seen on March 17 during a regular pesticide residue check in a Changsha farmers’ market. From March 17 to 19, local food safety officials conducted field research and sourced the peas back to Hengyang.Last Wednesday, officials from the Hengyang law enforcement team on agriculture smashed up two small illegal workshops where the peas were made.

A video provided by a local TV station showed the manufacturing process of the peas.

Bags of dried snow peas and soybeans were thrown into water-filled jars. With the help of light green colorant and sodium metabisulfite, a food additive used as a bleach and preservative, the previously wizened dry peas came out plump and fresh green.

However, the use of the light green colorant is forbidden in farm products, since it could cause cancer, the report said. Similarly, excessive intake of the sodium metabisulfite can hinder the human body’s absorption of calcium.

The processing of the peas is highly profitable, said Peng Xingguo, owner of one such illegal workshops. Peng’s workshop had been running for three years before it was exposed.

“Such toxic artificial green peas have been found in Hunan and Guangdong before, but it looks like the news didn’t catch enough attention from the officials,” Sang said on Monday.

In China, officials call it a “food safety incident” only after a death is reported.

Cancer to Go- Take out in China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on March 28, 2010

A little bit ago, I blogged about toxic Oil being used in Chienese restaurants. It was studied and found that China is reusing its cooking oil to the tune of about one-half of one pound per week per person in China. The oil was supposed to be rich in aflotoxin, a cancer causing agent.

Now, the take out boxes from China have been studied, and found that they too will cause cancer. In beijing, it was found that aroudn 30% of the boxes were substandard, so presumably cancer causing.

excerpt:

chinadaily.com

“BEIJING – Next time you say the word da bao (box it) at a restaurant, be aware, you could end up with a life-threatening disease. At least, that’s what an expert in food packaging claims.

According to Dong Jinshi, vice-president of the Hong Kong-based International Food Packaging Association (IFPA), about half of the disposable dishware used in the country are unsafe, with excessive amounts of chemicals that can cause cancer.

The situation in big cities is better, he said, adding that about 30 percent of disposable dishware found in Beijing is substandard.

Dong said his figures are based on a nine-year research project conducted by his association, in addition to some documents from the country’s top quality watchdog – the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

The latest case of unsafe disposable dishware Dong’s team detected was on March 3. The researchers visited two famous restaurants – the 170-year-old Laobian dumpling restaurant and the Dong Laishun restaurant – in Beijing and requested some disposable dishware.

The samples were then sent to the Beijing Center for Physical and Chemical Analysis, where tests indicated that the boxes contained excessive amounts of minerals, such as talcum powder and ceresin wax, which contains a substance that can cause cancer.

Zhang Zhisheng, a lawyer from the Beijing Zhongyin Law Firm, confirmed Dong and his team had filed a lawsuit against the two restaurants at the Haidian district people’s court, accusing them of selling poisonous foods.

“This will be the first case in which the newly issued Food Safety Law will come into play in consumer rights protection, Zhang said.

He added: “Consumers might not be willing to go to court for something cheaper than 1 yuan, which partly resulted in the manufacturers’ weak legal consciousness.”

Chinese Food

Posted by w_thames_the_d on March 28, 2010

From About.com, good  post here. I have had these things and they are a delight. They are pretty hot during certain times of the year, but they are always good.

“Thousand-Year Old Eggs
If the thought of eating food that could have been served to an Emperor during the Song dynasty offends your culinary sensibilities, relax. Thousand-year-old eggs aren’t really that old. A more accurate name for this pungent hors d’oeuvre would be salted or preserved eggs. Thousand-year old eggs (also called century eggs or hundred-year old eggs), are made by preserving duck eggs in ash and salt for one-hundred days. This turns the white of the egg a darkish gray color, giving the eggs an ancient appearance. Definitely an acquired taste, thousand-year old eggs have a strong salty flavor.”

No Wonder they Called the Stadium, The Birds Nest

Posted by w_thames_the_d on March 26, 2010

Chinese are preoccupied with their sex drive, sexual prowess etc. And, they will eat anything to prove it. See below from about.com

“Bird’s Nest Soup
The chief ingredient in Bird’s nest soup is the nest of the swiftlet, a tiny bird that lives in caves in Southeast Asia. Instead of twigs and straw, the swiftlet makes a nest from its own saliva – the only bird in the world to do so. Harvesting these nests requires great skill – men must balance on tall bamboo poles to grab the nests from inside the dark caves. Like sea cucumber, bird’s nest actually tastes rather bland. Its recent rise in popularity comes from its growing reputation both as a health tonic and an aphrodisiac.

China Responds, Cracking down on Toxic Cooking Oil and Chopsticks

Posted by w_thames_the_d on March 23, 2010

According to the Chinadaily, the chicoms have heard and are responding..

“The State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), China’s food safety watchdog agency, has issued two emergency notices to its bureaus nationwide to crack down on the use of swill-cooked oil and disposable chopsticks, both highly unhealthy products.

The urgent circulars, posted on the agency’s website on Thursday, followed recent news reports that these practices, for long a lightning rod for the watchdog’s dragnet, remain a perennial headache.
