Shakedown in China- Cops Shaking Down the Motorcycle Rickshaw Drivers

Posted by w_thames_the_d on August 3, 2010

This is kind of foolish. You can see the cops here telling illegal motorcycle taxis to get lost, to leave the area and quit providing taxi services. On the face of it, this seems reasonable, as the taxis are per se illegal. But then again we are in China, and that word seems to be painfully ambiguous.

Scary Income Disparity in China-800 People Have 16% of the Wealth- Unequal Wealth Distribution in China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on August 3, 2010

I blogged this before, but take a look at the stats below. It says that in China, 800 people have about 16% of the total wealth of China! This is astounding, in a country with so many people that so few have such a high percentage of the wealth.

To put it into perspective, this means that
800 people have 16% of the money and
1,299,999,920 have 84%

This is scary as such a disequilibrium in wealth is often associated with bad things, ie revolutions etc.
Now, to further investigate the situation in China, we see that:
-China and Hong Kong are numbers one and three in the Asia Pacific Region for the worst distribution of income. The implications are dramatic and scary.

Miracle Machine in China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on August 3, 2010

Chinese are funny, they like to show that they have innovation in their veins and are not as backwards as they have been taught to believe that they are. This is one of those types of stories. The chinadaily is talking about a guy who ‘invented’ a submarine. Kudos to the guy, it is cool and it works (he’s done more than I could have), but as for China (they called it a ‘miracle machine’), the invention is 400 years too late. The original was built around 1600…

Child Beggars in China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on August 3, 2010

China is a communist country so they should provide services such as health and social care for all. It seems, however, that they have forgotten that pledge. Lately there is another thing they have forgotten, apparently. That is to take care of the children.
Today and yesterday, I have seen a ton of children begging in the streets in the CBD of Beijing. Two and one half years ago, I never saw this phenomenon. I am quite surprised that the police allow it as they usually do not like behaviour that mars the image of the capital city.
I have heard that the kids are not really poor but are sent out by greedy parents, but the site of 5 and 6 year olds in the streets makes me sas.

One Chinese Province Has a U$1.5 billion Drug Habit

Posted by w_thames_the_d on August 3, 2010

China is really really opening up… I guess this is the bad part.

excerpt:

A new generation of illegal drugs is sweeping through secondary cities in China with registered users in south China’s Guangdong Province alone reaching 240,000.
The new drugs, including ketamine, ecstasy and crystal meth, have taken the place of heroin in China and have become the most popular narcotics in disco bars and karaokes in rural areas, the Guangzhou-based Southern Daily reported yesterday.

It said users in Guangdong Province spend more than 10 billion yuan (USD 1.5 billion) every year on drugs. Those who got addicted were almost all young people who took the drugs when socializing.

Kick Ass Like a Roman Gladiator, No its Not About Getting On the Subway in China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on August 3, 2010

This is pretty kick ass. I guess some school is offering genuine gladiator training. You sign up, they whip you into shape and then you have at it and club some other guys into submission. It does sound like entering the subways in China , but actually is not…
