Three Gorges Dam Clogged in China?

Posted by w_thames_the_d on August 2, 2010

This story about the 3 gorges dam in China being potentially clogged due to a collection of garbage has been reported quite a bit in the last four hours, so I faithfully Googled it as I found nothing about it in the local media. The funny thing is that when I double click on any article regarding this story, it is unavailable- dare I say blocked…
Yes this is correct, I cannot give you any more information about the fact that the three gorges dam in China which has about 3 tons of rubbish removed per day, is in danger of closing down due to this refuse that may get caught in its massive turbines. I know this dam is very important to China and possibly this is the reason for my inability to access the article, but I am unsure at this point.
I guess if you want more on it you can search, I am not so lucky.

Hookers in Shanghai- Come and Get ‘Em!

Posted by w_thames_the_d on August 2, 2010

This is an excerpt from the chinadialy. What they are saying is that Shanghai is not ‘cracking down’ on prostitutes like the other provinces in China. They uses statistics from other areas like Beijing etc. to prove this point.
My take
1- Shanghai wont crack down as there is currently to much money to be made from prostitution there. The world expo is going on, and locals and foreigners alike are coming and thus they need some stress relief don’t they (this is the mentality of the locals). Also, my friend has said that many of the cat houses here are actually run by men of great power, nudge nudge, thus are not easily shut down.
2-The crackdown of prostitution in general seems like a sham. My friend James lives on a street with a few ‘massage parlors’ of questionable repute. In China, much of what they say is smoke and mirrors, its all about image. They want the people and the world to think that all is ok, and they are governing well (as most countries do) and thus will do what it takes to propagate this image.
excerpt:
“SHANGHAI – Shanghai has been conspicuously absent from a roster of Chinese cities engaged in a high-profile nationwide campaign against prostitution, giving rise to speculation local police want to keep a low profile for visitors during the World Expo.
Since April, 26 cities have begun concerted drives against prostitution – along with gambling and drug abuse – which have, so far, enjoyed extensive media coverage.

Indeed, police from many major cities have scored so many successes that they issued monthly progress reports. Shanghai, by contrast, has made very few of its crackdowns known.”

Old Man Practicing Calligraphy on the Sidewalk in China

Posted by w_thames_the_d on August 2, 2010

To me, this photo pretty much represents China. Here is an old guy, probably 70 , has seen it all. Seen the birth of Communism, the cultural revolution, the opening up of China and here is is living like he never dreamed possible. The guy eats three good meals per day, can have meat more than once per month, and does not have to worry about ass-whippings from the red guard. So, here he sits, whiling away his nights doing Chinese calligraphy on the cement in front of an apartment his children bought for him.

Angry Chinese Teacher Rips a Child’s Cheeks Off- WTF??

Posted by w_thames_the_d on August 2, 2010

from weirdasiannews.com

WTF kind of schools do they run in China. Here is a case where an angry teacher actaully ripped a kid’s cheeks off. This place is Hee Haw, the Beverly Hillbillies and 1984…

story below

On December 18th, 2008, a 10 year-old 5th grader named Chao Qun Zheng went to his elementary school in HeNan, China.

When his teacher, Guo, found out that young Zheng had not completed his homework, she flipped out.“She was very angry at the time,” he said. “She ripped and twisted my cheeks with both her hands and then she lifted me off the ground.”

The teacher held the boy up until one of his cheeks actually ripped off and the boy was bleeding profusely. Without hesitation the teacher reached down and picked up Zheng’s cheek skin, put it on his face, and instructed the boy go home immediately.

Chinese Pollution- China Fact, Beijing Air “Very Dangerous”

Posted by w_thames_the_d on August 2, 2010

This is from the Guardian in 2008,

“… Beijing has been awarded an unwelcome new accolade: the air pollution capital of the world. Satellite data has revealed that the city is one of the worst environmental victims of China’s spectacular economic growth, which has brought with it air pollution levels that are blamed for more than 400,000 premature deaths a year.

According to the European Space Agency, Beijing and its neighbouring north-east Chinese provinces have the planet’s worst levels of nitrogen dioxide, which can cause fatal damage to the lungs.

Alarm about the perilous state of the environment has gathered pace in recent years. China is the world’s second-largest producer of greenhouse gases, and the World Bank has warned it is home to 16 of the planet’s 20 most air-polluted cities.

According to the European satellite data, pollutants in the sky over China have increased by about 50% during the past 10 years. At a recent seminar Zhang Lijun, deputy director of the environmental protection agency, said that pollution levels could more than quadruple within 15 years unless the country can slow the rise in energy consumption and automobile use.

A recently published study, conducted by the Chinese Academy on Environmental Planning, blamed air pollution for 411,000 premature deaths – mostly from lung and heart-related diseases – in 2003. It said that a third of China’s urban residents were exposed to harmful levels of pollution. More than 100 million people live in cities, such as Beijing, where the air is considered “very dangerous”.

from wierdasian news….

A man has been arrested for pouring his urine on a neighboring house on 169 occasions, causing the victim 650,000 yen in losses, police said.

Hiroshi Nishizaki, 46, a part-time worker from Ikeda, stands accused of damaging a structure. He admitted to the allegations during questioning.

“The view from my apartment has been blocked by the neighboring house, which was recently built, and I was irritated,” he was quoted as telling investigators.

Investigators are grilling Nishizaki over the exact motives for his crime.

Nishizaki urinated into bottles or pots and poured it on the outer wall of the neighboring house and over one of its outdoor air conditioning units from his apartment on at least 169 occasions between Feb. 17 this year and Monday this week, local police said. On one day, he stained the neighbor’s home nine times.

The victim was forced to replace part of the outer wall and suffered 650,000 in losses.

Nishizaki reportedly began to stain the neighboring home with his urine immediately after it was build in November 2004, investigators said.
